“The Warmth of Siddu”

“Siddu isn’t just food. It’s our winters, our stories, and our Himachali soul wrapped in steam.”

High up in the serene valleys of Himachal Pradesh, nestled between snow-capped peaks, lived an old woman named Deyna in a small wooden cottage. Every winter, villagers would gather in her kitchen, drawn by the aroma of freshly steamed siddu—a traditional Himachali bread stuffed with local spices and pulses.

One particularly cold evening, a lost traveler knocked on Deyna’s door. She welcomed him in and offered him a plate of siddu, served with a dab of ghee and spicy chutney. The man, weary and frozen, took a bite—and his eyes lit up. “This isn’t food,” he said with a smile, “it’s warmth you can taste.”

As it turned out, the traveler was a chef from Delhi. He returned a year later with a camera crew, hoping to document Deyna’s recipe. But Deyna just laughed, “Siddu isn’t a recipe; it’s patience, mountain air, and love.”

To this day, a sign hangs outside the cottage:
“No recipe cards. Just siddu and stories.”

🥟 Fascinating Facts about Siddu
∆ Origin: Siddu is native to the upper Shimla, Kullu, and Kinnaur regions of Himachal Pradesh.

∆ The dough is made from wheat flour, fermented using yeast for several hours. Once risen, it is stuffed and steamed over a low flame, often on a vessel containing boiling water.

∆ Unlike most Indian breads, siddu is never fried or baked. The slow steaming process keeps it soft and retains nutrients.

∆ Stuffing Variations:
Traditional: Roasted black gram or green peas with spices.
Modern: Cottage cheese, walnuts, and even sweet jaggery fillings in some households.

∆ Serving Tradition:
Typically served with ghee, chutney or mutton curry, especially in winter, as it helps retain body heat.

Nutritional Value:
High in carbohydrates and proteins, siddu is considered a perfect winter food, keeping people full and warm for longer.

Siddu isn’t just food—it’s a symbol of Himachali hospitality and slowness in an otherwise fast-paced world.

*The Guardian of Pangong Tso*

In the mystical land of Leh, nestled between the towering Himalayas and the serene Pangong Tso, there lived a legendary creature known as the Lungta — the Wind Horse. This majestic being, with shimmering dragon-like scales and mighty wings, was said to possess the power to command the weather and protect the sacred waters of the lake.

One day, a young Ladakhi girl named Tsering ventured to the lake's shores, searching for a rare herb to heal her ailing mother. As she wandered along the tranquil banks, the clouds thickened, and a sudden gust of wind led her to a hidden cave tucked among the cliffs.

From the shadows of the cave emerged the Lungta, its form glowing with a soft, iridescent light. With a voice like the whisper of the mountain winds, it spoke:
"Why have you come to our sacred lake, little one?"

Tsering, with folded hands, explained her quest. Moved by her courage and love, the Lungta gently placed the rare herb in her palm.
"Take this and heal your mother," it said, "but remember — Pangong Tso is alive. Its beauty is fragile. Protect it, and teach others to do the same."

Tsering returned home, cured her mother, and shared the tale of the Lungta with her village. Inspired by the guardian's message, the villagers united to protect the lake’s pristine shores, limiting pollution and respecting the rhythms of nature.

And so, the legend of the Lungta of Pangong Tso lived on — a silent protector in the winds, watching over the land, reminding all who listen that true magic lies in harmony with nature.
