Introducing Petti Restaurant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, where the setting has a story as interesting as the menu. “Petti” means “box” in Tamil, a fitting name for a space created using twelve discarded shipping containers.

Designed by Wallmakers, the structure pairs vertically arranged containers with a perforated, earth-poured façade that helps keep the interiors naturally cooler. The result is an inventive example of climate-responsive architecture shaped by reuse and local materials.

On the table, the experience stays rooted in the region with fresh seafood, Chettinad flavours, kothu porotta, elaneer kozhi and wood-fired favourites.

Known as kiyiz ui, the Kazakh yurt has been part of Central Asia’s nomadic heritage for over 2,000 years. Built with a wooden frame and felt coverings, this portable dwelling allowed herders to move across the steppes while adapting to changing seasons.

More than a shelter, the yurt has always been a gathering place for ceremonies, celebrations and family traditions. The knowledge of yurt-making continues through generations and was recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014.

During Nauryz celebrations, yurts become welcoming spaces where locals gather, share traditional meals and celebrate the arrival of spring. For travellers, stepping inside a yurt offers a glimpse into Kazakhstan’s nomadic roots and the stories that continue to live within these remarkable homes.
