There is a tree in the garden of Uga Riva that Mahatma Gandhi planted in 1927. It is still standing.

That detail tells you everything about this place. A 180-year-old wallawwa — a traditional Sri Lankan manor house — that has been home to six generations of a prominent Colombo family, and guest to some of the most significant figures of the 20th century. Presidents, prime ministers, and one man who changed the world, all passed through these pillared verandahs and arched doorways.

Today, Uga Riva has just seven rooms. Restored period furniture, contemporary Sri Lankan art on the walls, a courtyard wrapped around a pond, and five acres of coconut estate to get quietly, completely lost in. The kind of property where you arrive planning to stay one night and find yourself rearranging your itinerary to stay three.

This is how Sri Lanka should begin. Or end. Either way — don't skip it.

Everyone goes to Varanasi for the ghats. Almost nobody goes to the old city's narrow lanes before sunrise, where Banarasi silk weavers are already at their looms — the rhythmic clack of a handloom threading gold zari into silk that takes three days to finish one saree.

These aren't showrooms. These are homes, with looms where the living room should be. Multi-generational families, each member with a different role in the same continuous thread. The weaver whose grandfather wove for the royal family of Banaras. The son who is learning the same pattern from memory.

This is Varanasi before the tourists, before the boat rides, before the aarti. This is the city actually working. And it is extraordinary.

Ask a palace guard in Jaipur how long he's worked here. The answer is rarely just a number.

For many of these men, it's not a job — it's a lineage. Father to son, sometimes grandfather to grandson. The same palace gates, the same red turban tied the same way every morning, the same silver staff that has stood through decades of tourists who came, photographed the building, and left without ever saying a word.

The red turban alone is a statement — its colour, its knot, even its height carries meaning in Rajasthani culture. These men are not just guards. They are the living continuation of a royal tradition that Jaipur's palaces were built on.

Next time you visit — stop. Look them in the eye. Say namaste. Ask their name. The palace will still be there for the photo. 🇮🇳

Old Delhi is one of the loudest, most alive, most overwhelming places you will ever set foot in. And right in the middle of it — behind a cusp-arched gateway on a narrow lane near Jama Masjid — is one of the most serene addresses in India.

Haveli Dharampura is a Mughal-era haveli that was restored from near dereliction and went on to win UNESCO's Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation. Thick stone walls that shut out the city the moment you step through. Jharokha rooms overlooking carved courtyards. Shahjahan suites that feel like they belong to a different century — because they do.

But what makes it truly special is what happens after dark. Kathak performances in the courtyard. Ghazal evenings where poetry fills the air. Kite flying and high-tea on the rooftop with all of Old Delhi spread below you. A restaurant — Lakhori — that serves food from recipes this part of Delhi has been cooking for centuries.

This is not just a place to sleep. It's the entire reason to come to Old Delhi.

In Kathmandu, the pigeons are part of the architecture.

They line the tiered rooftops of 400-year-old Newari temples. They scatter the moment a child runs through. They turn every ordinary square into a scene that no photographer could choreograph — and every visitor into a photographer.

Durbar Square. Boudhanath. Patan Durbar. Three of Asia's most extraordinary UNESCO heritage sites, made even more alive by the thousands of birds that have always called them home.

This is Kathmandu on any given morning. Unchanged, unhurried, and absolutely unmissable.

Long before modern sustainability became a global conversation, India had already mastered the art of living in harmony with nature.

Stepwells were not just architectural marvels — they were intelligent water conservation systems, community gathering spaces, and symbols of thoughtful design built to withstand harsh climates.

Today, these forgotten wonders remind us that meaningful travel is not only about discovering beautiful places, but also about understanding the stories, traditions, and wisdom they carry within them.

At Distinct Destinations, we believe travel becomes more enriching when it connects us to heritage, local narratives, and sustainable ways of living that continue to inspire generations.

Summer in Sikkim is an invitation to slow down amidst Himalayan grandeur.

From the royal elegance of The Elgin Nor-Khill, Gangtok to breathtaking trails, monasteries, alpine lakes, and views of Mt. Khangchendzonga, Sikkim offers a journey filled with heritage, culture, and unforgettable mountain experiences.

Once the residence of Sikkim’s royal family, The Elgin Nor-Khill beautifully preserves the charm of a bygone era — with teakwood interiors, crackling fireplaces, curated art, and warm Himalayan hospitality.

Whether it’s exploring Rumtek Monastery, walking through oak forests, or unwinding with mountain views, this is summer at its most soulful.

Read our latest blog and discover why Sikkim deserves a place on your summer travel list. https://distinctdestinations.in/blog/india/summering-in-sikkim

Before there were books, there were scrolls.

Cheriyal scroll painting is one of India's oldest storytelling traditions — vivid, hand-painted narratives on cloth, created by the Nakashi community of Telangana. Each scroll tells a complete story from Hindu mythology — the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, tales of local deities — panel by panel, like the world's oldest graphic novel.

Every colour is made from natural sources. Red from stone, yellow from turmeric, green from leaves, black from soot. The figures are bold, flat, and expressive — faces painted in profile, eyes wide open, every character immediately recognisable to the community it was made for.

These scrolls were once unrolled at village gatherings while the artist narrated the story aloud — part painting, part performance, part oral history. A one-person theatre that kept entire communities connected to their mythology for generations.

Today, fewer than 20 families continue this tradition. Every scroll that exists is made by hand, in one village, by people who have known no other craft.

This morning, our team was fortunate to witness an incredible tiger sighting at Ranthambore National Park, a moment that perfectly captures the magic of India’s wilderness. Seeing this majestic predator in its natural habitat, moving gracefully through the forest, is always a reminder of why these landscapes are so special.

Experiences like these are what make Ranthambore truly unforgettable.

The wild has its own way of rewarding patience—and this morning, it delivered.
