The ghats may provide Varanasi with its most recognisable image, but much of the city's everyday story unfolds in the lanes immediately behind them.

Walking through the old quarters brings travellers into a closely connected world of temples, homes, markets and workshops. A journey to Jaffna adds an entirely different chapter to Sri Lanka. The architecture changes, Tamil culture becomes more prominent, Hindu temples punctuate the landscape and the cuisine introduces flavours rarely encountered in quite the same way elsewhere on the island.

The Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil is central to the city's religious life, while Jaffna Fort provides evidence of the European powers that once competed for control of this strategically important peninsula. The architecture of New Delhi tells the story of a capital that has lived two very different political lives.

The modern administrative city began taking shape after 1911, when British India moved its capital from Calcutta to Delhi. Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker were among the principal architects entrusted with creating a city intended to express imperial authority through monumental buildings, broad avenues and carefully planned public spaces.

Yet the architecture that emerged was not simply European. Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Secretariat buildings and other structures incorporated Indian elements including chhatris, jaalis, domes and local sandstone, producing a distinctive architectural character that remains immediately recognisable today.

Independence transformed their purpose. The Viceroy's House became Rashtrapati Bhavan, government buildings became institutions of the Indian republic and the former imperial ceremonial axis eventually became Kartavya Path.

Exploring this district alongside Old Delhi and the city's earlier Mughal and Sultanate monuments allows travellers to read Delhi almost chronologically through its architecture. Each period built its own version of the capital, and each left something behind.

Tadoba is one of Maharashtra's most important wildlife landscapes, and while its tigers understandably receive much of the attention, the reserve offers a considerably broader safari experience.

Dry deciduous forest, bamboo, grasslands and lakes support leopards, sloth bears, dholes, gaurs, deer, crocodiles and diverse birdlife alongside the tiger. Each habitat produces different encounters, making repeated drives particularly worthwhile for travellers interested in understanding how the ecosystem functions rather than simply pursuing a sighting.

When to visit depends partly on what the traveller values. November to February offers cooler and more comfortable conditions, while March to May brings higher temperatures but can create rewarding wildlife viewing around water sources. Staying for three nights or longer allows time for multiple safaris and a more relaxed understanding of the reserve.
