ChaloHoppo Using travel as a vehicle to preserve the natural and cultural heritage of North-East India. We are currently exploring the northeast of India.

Hoppo is derived from the Lakota language used by the Great Red Indians in American means ‘Let’s Go’, a mindset we look to inculcate in all those who travel with us. With unique itineraries as well as bespoke holidays we seek to entertain everybody looking to pause their busy lives for a few days to ChaloHoppo with us! ChaloHoppo promises you a wide variety of trips, from professionally guided tours in the most famous parts of the seven states to handpicking locations for soul searching solo trips.

We travel so far, only to hurry once we get there.

There is always another viewpoint to reach, another village to visit, another thing to tick off before the day ends.

But perhaps the point of travel is not to see as much as possible.

Perhaps it is to notice more.

To stay at the viewpoint after everyone else has left.

To let a conversation with a stranger run longer than planned.

To sit by a river without wondering what comes next.

To take the slower road simply because it gives you more time to look around.

Travel changes when we stop measuring a day by how much we managed to fit into it.

Some places deserve more than our photographs.

Some trips are already on the calendar.

Some begin as a question.

This one is still a dream.

We have imagined a journey through three extraordinary forest landscapes Nameri, Pakke and Singchung–Bugun moving from the river edge of Assam into the forests of Arunachal Pradesh.

We would love to conduct it for you.

But to be clear, this is not an existing ChaloHoppo trip yet. It is one of our dream journeys a route we are putting out into the world to find the people who might want to make it real with us.

For a Hoolock gibbon, the forest is not beneath its feet.
It is above its head.

At the Hollongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary near Jorhat, the railway line running through the forest created something we might easily overlook: a break in the canopy. For an animal that spends almost its entire life in the trees, that gap can divide its world in two.

Conservation here has therefore also meant reconnecting the forest.

Beginning in 2006, native trees important to gibbons were planted along the railway corridor. More than a decade later, their branches finally met above the tracks, creating a natural canopy bridge that gibbons were observed using from 2019.

More recently, the Assam Forest Department, Wildlife Institute of India and other stakeholders have worked on specially designed artificial canopy bridges across the railway gap. In 2026, a male Hoolock gibbon was recorded using one of the newly installed bridges.

It is a small crossing in a forest of 20.98 sq km.

But perhaps conservation often looks like this: understanding how another species moves through the world, recognising what we have interrupted, and finding a way to give that path back.

We often think we get to know a place by seeing more of it.

But sometimes, we understand it better by simply sitting down.

At a table in someone’s home. Sharing food whose names we may not know. Listening to stories that would never appear in a guidebook. Accepting another helping because saying no somehow feels impolite.

Travel has a curious way of making strangers familiar.

For an hour or two, the distance between visitor and local disappears. There is food being passed around, laughter over things that need no translation, and the small privilege of seeing how life is lived when nobody is performing it for you.

Perhaps that is one of the better reasons to travel.
