The Guwahati Metro (Assamese: গুৱাহাটী মেট্রো) is a rapid transit proposed for the city of Guwahati, Assam, India.

The total system consists of 3 corridors covering a distance of 44.2 km.[1]

History

On 11 January, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi held discussions with officials of Guwahati Development Department (GDD) and Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), in which after detailed deliberations it was agreed by the Chief Minister that th

ere is a need of urgently taking up the study of introducing metro rail and a bus rapid transit system (BRTS) in the city to arrest the chaotic traffic condition on the streets.[2]

Feasibility Study[edit]

The survey of the proposed project will include preliminary exercises such as a study of the number of commuters in different areas of the city at different times of the day and a calculation of the estimated cost of the project.[3] The survey will conduct a track type feasibility study at different places. Three types are considered 1. Underground Track, 2. Overground track, 3. Elevated track .The Khanapara - Jalukbari route will have Overground & Elevated tracks because this route is not congested. The other two routes will be a combination of Underground and Elevated tracks. Route

Three corridors have been planned by GMDA . Corridor 1: Airport to Narengi via Jalukbari, Bharalumukh, Fancy Bazar, Chandmari, Noonmati connecting eastern and western part of the city with a length of 32.4 km[4]
Corridor 2: Paltan Bazar - Khanapara via, Ulubari, Bhangagarh, Ganeshguri and Dispur connecting central area with south eastern part of the city with a length of 11.8 km.[5]

The government is re-examining if all the four corridors outlined in the first phase of the three-phase mass rapid transit system (MRTS) is required or if their number needs to be reduced. It is also reconsidering the phasing of the project.
