Amidst the hustle and bustle of Bihu festivities and election commotion, the long-awaited instructions for the nature camp finally arrived, signaling the beginning of an enriching adventure.
Organized under the Environmental Education program, "Life in Assam," and facilitated by "We For You," in collaboration with the Assam Science Technology and Environment Council and Azadi Adventures , the two-day nature camp commenced on April 25, 2024.
The journey commenced with a picturesque drive through Balipara, culminating at the Garo Village Home Stay near Nameri. Welcomed by the warm hospitality of the villagers, the students found themselves amidst a haven of tranquility, surrounded by vibrant flora and cozy accommodations. With three rooms, a charming hut, an open house, and seven tents, each student found their space to unwind and immerse themselves in the beauty of their surroundings.
The camp kicked off with a myriad of activities, fostering camaraderie amongst students from different schools. From engaging games to insightful discussions on nature and environmental balance, each moment was brimming with enthusiasm and learning. Sushila Changma, the visionary behind Garo Village Home Stay, shared her journey of empowering women through self-help groups, inspiring all with her resilience and dedication.
Guided by knowledgeable mentors like Kishore Bora and Trinayan Gogoi of Azadi Adventures, the students delved into the intricacies of nature conservation. From learning about wildlife rescue techniques to understanding wildlife preservation, including safety measures for encounters with animals like snakes, tigers, and elephants, every session was an eye-opener. A poignant documentary shed light on the challenges faced by wildlife, evoking empathy and admiration for their resilience.
As the students trekked through Nameri National Park on April 26, traversing the Bharali River by boat four times, they were enveloped by the tranquil ambiance of the wilderness. Though sightings of exotic animals eluded them, the experience was enriched by encounters with diverse flora and interactions with passionate forest guards, who shared their love for literature and their dedication to protecting the park.
As the sun set on the horizon, casting a golden glow over the verdant landscape, the students bid farewell to Nameri National Park, their hearts brimming with gratitude for the unforgettable experience. Through the seamless coordination of organizers, teachers, and mentors, the nature camp proved to be a resounding success, leaving an indelible mark on each participant's soul.
As they return to their daily lives, the memories of the river of words, shared amidst the wilderness, will continue to inspire a deep-seated love and appreciation for nature in the hearts of these young stewards of the environment.
