SD | The Dorbar Shnong of Mawlynnong, famously branded as “Asia’s Cleanest Village,” has announced that the village will remain closed to tourists every Sunday starting January 2026. Visitors will be allowed entry only from Monday to Saturday.

According to the official notification, all tourism-related services including restaurants, local shops and stalls, viewpoints, parking areas, and even public toilets will be completely shut every Sunday.

The only exemption applies to tourists who have already checked into homestays or guest houses before Sunday and whose stay extends into the restricted day.

The Dorbar said the decision is rooted in community and cultural needs, as Sundays are observed as days of worship across the village. Most households are engaged in church-related activities, leaving hospitality providers unable to properly attend to the steady flow of tourists.

The weekly closure, the Dorbar added, is also an attempt to avoid past inconveniences faced by visitors, particularly senior citizens, when essential services could not be provided on Sundays.

“This step is meant to balance Mawlynnong’s tourism inflow with the social and spiritual rhythms of the community, and to preserve the village’s reputation as a responsible and welcoming destination,” the notification stated.
