Sensitive footage: This video shows the death of a lion cub and may be distressing to some viewers.

Shot by our guest Kamal in the Mara Naboisho Conservancy in January 2026, while on safari with Happy Hathi. Mara Naboisho Conservancy boasts of having the highest density of lions in the world!

A herd of buffalo closed in on a lion cub. The pride was there. The adult male was there. And yet, there was almost nothing they could do.

Buffalo are among the most dangerous animals for lions to take on. When they stand together, even a pride can be forced to keep its distance.

The wild is not cruel, and it is not kind. It simply carries on. Sometimes, all we can do is witness it.

But why did the Buffalo herd kill the lion cub?

Because to a buffalo herd, a lion cub is still a lion and a very real threat. One day the lion cub will grow up and take down the buffalo. It is better understood as anti-predator behaviour: removing or attacking a predator when the opportunity arises.

More likely, the lions triggered a strong response and the cub was simply the most vulnerable member of the pride when the herd turned the tables.

We often talk about not interfering with nature, and rightly so. But there are moments when that principle is much harder to live by than to say. For Kamal and his guide, watching this unfold was one of them.
