Tehri Travel Guide
Dammed Scenic Beauty

Tehri is a beautiful town in the state of Uttrakhand. It is also known as the municipal board of Tehri Garhwal District in Uttarakhand. It is one of the largest districts in Uttrakhand. It is considered as one of the holiest places of the state as it has numerous temples and is located at the confluence of the holy rivers, Ganga and Yamuna. It serves the purpose of the tourists and devotees to great extent. There are many temples like Ragunathji Temple, Surkhanda Devi Temple and others located here. Buda Kedar, a well-known temple located in the district houses a Shiva Linga. Khatling Glacier lies around 62 kilometers away from Tehri. This is a popular tourist spot suitable for skiing. Chamba is the popular hill station in the district of Tehri Garhwal, which is located 60 km from Tehri, at an altitude of around 5000 feet. The Tehri dam is also a famous tourist spot for its marvelous architectural structure. There are many picnic sites like Dhanulti and Dev Prayag.

New Tehri is a newly built modern town located at a height of 1,550 meters. It is considered as the headquarters of Tehri Garhwal district as this town has been established to rehabilitate Old Tehri. This town has been established to give way to the Tehri dam. New Tehri is known be the most comprehensive and unbeaten rehabilitation programmes of Asia. As a whole, the town has developed into an attractive hill resort. OLD Tehri is 16 km away from New Tehri and is 84 km from Rishikesh joining together with Bhagirathi and Bhilangana rivers. Old Tehri is known as the transit point to Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. With the assistance of the East India Company in the year 1815, it was declared as the capital of Tehri Garhwal by Raja Sudarshan Shah, after the eviction of the Gurkhas.
