NohKaLikai Falls â A Wonder of Meghalaya!!
Explore Indiaâs top plunge waterfall â NohKaLikai, at Sohra (Cherrapunjee), 70 KMs away from Shillong, Meghalayaâs capital city.
Jumping from a height of 1,115 Feet, this waterfall offers a gorgeous view which can be enjoyed from a well-made viewpoint.
This waterfall is basically made from rainwater. All water accumulates at the top of the hill and jumps from the cliff.
There is a very famous legend regarding this waterfall which is both cruel and heartbreaking. The legend is as follows:
In a village called Rangjyrteh, upstream from Nohkalikai Falls, there lived a woman named Likai who forced to marry second time following the death of her husband.
Her husband got jealous due to divided attention from his newly married wife as there was a child from first marriage of Likai. So due to this jealousy and rage, one day when Likai went to work, her husband killed the infant and just to add extra evil to this story, cooked the deceased infant and kept it for Likai.
When Ka Likai returned, she found the house empty, although someone had prepared a meal. She wanted to go and look for her daughter, but was so famished from her labours that she fell upon the dish of cooked meat, devouring it avidly until she could eat no more.
Ka Likai usually chewed a betel quid after her meal, but was horrified to discover a severed finger near the place where she usually prepared her betel nuts and betel leaves.
Overcome with unspeakable grief she ran towards the edge of the cliff and plunged to her death. The waterfall was named after her.
NohKaLikai Falls, when translated from local Khasi dialect, means, Jump of Ka Likai (Ka is a term used for women in Khasi culture).
Apart from the story, this waterfall is awesome to enjoy and a scene to behold. Best enjoyed at the time of sunset.
This is a must visit in your trip to Meghalaya.
