The Asaf Jahis broke away from the Mughals after the death of Aurangazeb, and declared themselves independent in the chaos that followed the weakening of the Mughal empire. They adopted the title Nizam of Hyderabad.

Like the rest of India, the Nizams suffered the depredations of the Marathas who were, in that era, making the most of the vacuum left behind by the Mughals.

They aligned with Haider Ali of Mysore initially, but eventually decided to align with the British against Haider Ali's son Tipu Sultan. It was an uncomfortable and prickly alliance, but it allowed the Nizams to establish the richest princely kingdom in India.

When the British left India, they signed a document allowing the Nizams to remain independent. The newly formed Indian army invaded Hyderabad. Thr British did not respond to the Nizams appeals. On 26 January 1950, India formally incorporated the state of Hyderabad into the Union of India. Thus ended the rule of the Nizams.

We spent a peaceful evening at the Jain temple in Medchal, in the outskirts of Hyderabad.

We saw a lady ascetic ascending the steps of a Jain temple in the outskirts of Hyderabad. These ascetics, called "maharaj saheb" in Jainism, often give up all their worldly possessions and family ties.

They do not stay in one place for long, instead traveling to various Jain temples across the country.
