Bakta Kannappa

Kakatiya Shilpakala Vaibhavam- 36

Born as Thinna, in a hunter Chenchu family at Uduppura, near present day , district, , Kannappa was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva.

His devotion to Shiva began when he discovered the vayu linga (embodiment of air) while hunting in the forest.
He offered the God whatever he could, including water from his mouth and meat from his hunts. Eveng though, his acts were unconventional they were accepted by Shiva due to his sincerity and pure heart.

One day Thinna noticed that the Shiva Linga was bleeding from one of its eyes. Without hesitation, he plucked out one of his own eyes and placed it on the lingam to stop the bleeding. This is the image depicted below.

When the other eye of the Linga began to bleed, he prepared to offer his remaining eye. To ensure he could correctly place his eye, he marked the spot with his foot.

Moved by his act of devotion, Shiva appeared and stopped him, restoring his sight and granting him liberation. As he plucked out his eyes, he got the name Kannappa (Kannu= eyes in Telugu).

His Vayu Linga is worshipped today as Srikalahasteśvara at Srikalahasti temple in Andhra Pradesh.

Below is an interesting display of Kannappa piercing his eye and keeping his foot to stop the bleeding from the Linga (reference pic attached) seen on a panel at the famous hill temple of Tripurāntakeśvara at Tripurantakam, revenue division, , .

As per an inscription here, the central shrine of this celebrated Shaivite pilgrimage was built in stone in 1255 AD (S. 1177) by Śāntāśāmbhu son of Vìśvēśvaraśivācārya the religious preceptor of Kakatiya sovereign Ganapati Devā.

Chaya Someshwara Temple – The Shadow That Never Moves

Nestled in the ancient town of Panagal in Nalgonda district, this 11th-century marvel stands as a testimony to the architectural brilliance of the Kakatiya and Chalukyan dynasties. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple gets its name from a mysterious perpetual shadow (Chaya) that falls on the Shiva Lingam believed to be cast by intricately carved pillars, regardless of the time of day.

The temple’s unique play of light and shadow, elegant stone carvings, and serene surroundings make it not just a spiritual destination, but a timeless architectural wonder of Telangana.
