1.Md Siraj-uddin Khan Ipham also known as M K Siraj is the second son of Late Md Khwaj Ali
Khan and Late Karima Begum. He has four brothers and two sisters. He was born on
01-01-1955 at Kshetri, Awang, Leikai, Imphal East Kshetrigao Assembly Costituency in a poor
family. His parents were illiterate.
2. Education. He began his education in a local, Govt L.P School then got admitted in the
Ananda Singh Academy, a high school in Checkon. After matriculation, he got admitted in the
D.M. College of Science and completed B.Sc. (Bio-Chemistry). He did MA English from the
Manipur University, Canchipur.
3. Academic Excellence. He was a hard-working and brilliant student. In the middle school
leaving certificate (M.S.L.C) Examination 1970-71 he got 3rd position. And in the H.S.L.C
Examination Manipur (BOSEM) held in the year 1972-1973 (The First HSLC Exam conducted by BOSEM) he got 10th Position.He was the first Meitei Pangal Position Holder for the HSLC exams conducted by BOSEM. He got scholarship during his school days
and at college he got National Scholarship.
4. Family. During school days, he used to stay alone, away from friends. He was often
thoughtful. He was a timid boy and was always shy. As he grew up, timidity left him. He always
helped his parents in domestic affairs. He was always an obedient son. His family lived on a
small income, solely based on (limited) paddy cultivation. They faced several hardships and
misfortunes for a couple of years. After he got a Govt job he took up the heavy burden of
maintaining his family economically. He is always optimistic and patient. His motto in life is :
Plain Living, High Thinking.
5. Job/ Office Career. He got three Govt Jobs (two in Tele-communication office/ Dept.). He
joined as a T.S. Clerk in late 1978. In 1980 he got a job in the Co-operative Department as Co-
operative Inspector. In due course of time he was promoted to Sub-Registrar, then as Assistant
Registrar (Class-II Gazetted Post), then as District Co-operative Officer (DCO, Class-I Gazetted
Post) and posted in Imphal East. His last assignment was as Joint Registrar (Class-I Gazetted
Post) posted at Co-operative Complex Lamphelpat. He retired from Govt service on September
30, 2018.
6. Married Life. He is married to Syed Basinajan Begum. They have two daughters –
Nusrat Begum and Khalida Begum and a son Md Imran Khan. Nusrat Begum is M.A. in English
and also M.A. (History). Khalida Begum is M.A. in Manipuri. Md Imran Khan is M.A. in
Psychology.

7. Teaching Career. He became an English tutor and was running an English Coaching
Centre named “The Eastern English Coaching Centre” at home. With the slogan ‘Know English,
Know the World’ he started Free & Special English Coaching Classes during summer vacations
at several places (schools) in Imphal East. As Iron Pieces get attracted to a Magnet, students
got attracted to him in general. A large number of students rushed in to join his Free & Special
English Coaching classes. It attracted students from different places of Manipur. At the end of a
Free Coaching class, he used to organised a big function for famous Manipuri Singers for the
entertainment of students. From time to time, he organized stage programs for students to
sharpen their innate talents. For nearly two decades he continued to teach English. He tried his
best to let students know English well. He also taught them about good manners and good
behavior. Students in general and elders too, are fond of him. He had taught some prominent
students.
8. Oxford English School. Acting on the suggestions of some local elders and some of
senior students, he established an English medium school ‘The Oxford English School’ for
classes, Nursery up to Class VIII at Kshetri Awang Leikai, Imphal East in December 1990. This
school was the first English medium private school established in the locality. His school got
govt registration promptly. For poor students there was exemption from payment of tuition. Urdu
and Meitei Mayek classes were included. For some years he acted as the Principal. His school
became a successful school and had produce many good students. His school had produced
one MLA (Kshetrigao A/C), One MCS officers, one police O.C. (Imphal East) etc.
9. Club Affairs. For some years he was the President of our local club ‘Kshetri Iril
Mapal Youth Club’ and took up good works in public interest. During the ‘Rape and Murder of
Tamphasana , a burning issue that shocked every heart, he was the president of our local club
then. He in collaboration with R.A. Shah of Khergao, organized a state-level meeting at the
campus of our local club K.I.Y.C. Kshetri Awang Leikai in connection with the above sad
incident. Representatives of several clubs and organizations rushed in for participation at the
protest meeting. There were several fire brand speakers whose speeches were flashed at
several local dailies of Manipur. The movement was a grand success.
10. Naharolgi Khonjel : From his school days, he have picked up a habit of writing
Manipuri Poems and short stories. From time to time he took part in the Naharolgi Khonjel
Program of AIR Imphal reciting his poems and reading short stories.
11. Radio Talks : For some years, he delivered Radio Talks at AIR Imphal- notably, on
‘Martyrdom of Mahatma Gandhi, Milad-un Nabi’ (Birthday of Prophet Hazarat Muhammad) ‘Id-
ul-Fitr, ’Idul Zuha’, Recovery of Loan, and ‘ How to control fire/wild fire’ etc.
12. Radio Drama (Play):- He have written a Radio – Drama (Play) entitled ‘Lakhipurgi
Kangluraba Iehel’. And, the play was broadcast at AIR Imphal couple of years ago. His Radio
play was a most successful play. Letters of appreciation came from different places of Manipur
and from Silchar and Cachar. It was feature in Mani – Mala Chithi Pakhum. Radio plays namely
‘Nong Puba Leichil,’ ‘Nongban Mantri,’ etc. are in the pipeline.
13. A Lyricist:- He is a lyricist of Manipuri songs approved by AIR Imphal. More than
twenty songs written by him have been sung by some well-known Manipuri singers namely,
Roop – Raag Singers led by Aheibam Shyam, Moirangthem Tiken Singh, Asem Bimola Devi,
Shumurailatpam Naba Chandra Sharma (Naba Volcano), Rupachandra Ningomba, Nongju
Naba, Mairembam Nillabati Devi etc. Two of his songs became popular :-
(a) Patriotic Song, Sung by Roop Raag Singers broadcast on AIRImphal and also
telecast on Doordarshan Kendra Imphal.

(b) Another song, sung by Shamurailatpam Nabachandra Sharma, popularly known
as Naba Volcano. This song was sung on the stage in different places of Manipur.

This song was included in ‘Top Four Songs’ of Naba Volcano, recorded in his
cassette entitled “Top Four”.
14. A Manipuri Film Artist - A Pioneer : He was the First Meitei Pangal Film Artist. He acted in 8 Manipuri Films ( including 2 Celluloid Films) and one Tele Film in English, successfully. When he was serving as an Inspector, some elders of Kongba areas introduced him to Oken Amakcham a well
known Manipuri film Actor and Director also a National Awardee. He was picked up for the role
of a school teacher and a subordinate role for Manipuri Digital Film directed by Oken
Amakcham entitled “Ichelsida”. Luckily he happens to be photogenetic . “Ichelsida” became a
most successful film. Luckily he got chances to act in two Celluloid Manipuri Films entitled
“Cheina” and “Thajabagi Wangmada” respectively directed both by Oken AMakcham. In “Cheina” film,
he acted as a sub-ordinate actor in a marriage related scene. And in “Thajabagi Wangmada” he
was given the role of an Accountant of a Govt Office. In the film “Nangtana Helli” a Digital film
directed by Oken he was give the role of an Engineer. And in “Punsisina Kanagi” a Digital film
directed Oken he acted in the role of a school principal.
In a Tele-Film produced for Nagaland Doordarshan and English medium film entitled “Auto-
Rickshaw-Driver” directed by Oken Amakcham he was given the role of a Friend of the Hero. He was the
screenplay writer of the film. In the digital film entitled “Imungi Lanjao” written and directed by
Moirangthem Inao Singh, a renowned radio playwright, he was given the role of Father of a Muslim Family, an officer.
In the Tele-Film entitled “Noor Begum” directed by Ch.Inaobi Singh he was given the role of a
Muslim elder. He was the Chief-Consultant of the Film. He participated in several film-shooting
incidents along with various Directors.
15. A Theatre Artist. He joined the ‘Juvenile Theatre’ of Kongba Nongthombam Leikai
under the guidance of Oken Amakcham. He participated in theatre training classes. He also
participated as a theatre artist of a state-level short-play competition organized at Leimayol Art
Centre, Singjamei.
16. A Critic. He was a columnist of the English local daily, ‘Imphal Free Press’ edited by
a renowned journalist Pradip Phanjaobam. He wrote several columns, as a critic of theatre plays,
Manipuri Shumang Lila plays and Manipuri (feature) films. He has written several critical
appreciations on selected and notable theatre plays Shumang Lila and Manipuri films for about
four or five years. And he became a most sought after columnist. He wrote a notable column on
the evolution of Manipuri Shumang Lila based on his interview with M.Nabakumar Singh, a
pioneer and one of the 4 founder members of Manipuri Shumang Lila. It was an valuable essay
containing precious facts. He wrote critical appreciations of selected Shumang Lila plays that
were participated in the Annual Shumang Lila Festivals organized by the Shumang Lila Council
of Manipur under State Kala Academy. Notable event was his interview by a renowned
Shumang Lila Director, Birjit Nangomba at his Lila Training Centre, Naga Mapal Imphal. And He
wrote a column on “Gusmaogi Khudol” (a play about the affairs of the tiny state of East Timor), a
play of peace Maker Artists’ Assn directed by Birjit Nangomba. He wrote columns on three or
four plays of Yumnam Rajen Singh a noted Director of Panthoibi Natya Mandir’ Yumnam Leikai.
Yumnam Rajen Singh, a writer-Director is used to produce comic and realistic plays. The last
but not the least was his interview with L.Sadananda Singh a renowned and conspicuous
Director of ‘Mime Repertory Theatre’, Yumnam Leikai. Mime plays are played without any
dialogue. He wrote an invaluable essay on Mime plays, containing precious facts regarding its
evolution and particularly on Sadananda’s Mime plays.
17. him:-
Sub Titles. English sub title (English translations) of the following (works) are done by
(a) Documentary Film on Ratan Thiyam (a world-famous theatre Director’s) Play
entitled “Nine Hills and One Valley” directed by Oken Amakcham.
(b) Documentary Film on M.Nabakumar Singh, a pioneer artist and a founder
member of Manipuri Shumang Lila directed by Oken Amakcham.
(c) “Noor Begum” a Manipuri Tele-Film directed by Ch Inaobi Singh.
18. A Writer. As a Poet, short story writer, playwright, a comic writer, he had written
several poems. He is going to publish a book of poems in Manipuri entitled ‘Imphal Turelna Kari
Hayri (what does the Imphal River Tell Us?) shortly. These poems deal on various problems of
Manipur and hence mostly realistic and patriotic. Every poems sends out a lovely message. He
have also written from time to time, several short stories. After writing some more short stories I
he is going to publish a book of short stories entitled “Manipur Bund”,. He have also written
several short comic stories for comic relief for the general people. He is planning to publish a
book of short comic stories in due course of time, entitled ‘Phagi Kangau Mathel Mathel’.
19. A Youtuber. He currently running a YouTube channel called “English Teaching Lectures by MK Siraj”,
where he also teach English grammar online to support underprivileged students. He might
even be one of the oldest YouTubers in Manipur.
