Health Dept advises against use of cord device ‘Virus Shut Out’ to prevent COVID-19

TMB Report

IMPHAL: Even as 118 fresh cases including 71 with no history of travelling outside the state were reported in the last 24 hours which took the total count of confirmed Covid-19 cases to 3753, the Health Department, Government of Manipur has advised against the use of plastic cord device ‘Virus Shut Out’ to prevent the novel virus.

Dr Khoirom Shasheekumar Mangang, Addl. Director and Spokesperson, Health Department observed and pointed out that the use of Chlorine dioxide releasing plastic cord device “Virus Shut Out” made in foreign countries has increased among people.

Chlorine dioxide in aqueous solution is used in disinfection of drinking water. The virus destroying capacity in the spray form or slowly emitting gas form is not yet established, he said adding that the state Health Department does not recommend its use in prevention of Covid-19 pandemic and the public must be wary of use of such unproven devices, added the statement.

On the other hand, of the 118 fresh positive cases, 90 are civilians while 28 belonged to Central Armed Police Force. Of the 90 infected civilians, 71 persons do not have significant travel history except for 2 from Imphal East district, 11 from Kangpokpi district, 3 from Senapati district, one each from Churachandpur district, Imphal West district and Jiribam district, according to Covid Common Control Room.

The Manipur government has set up dedicated quarantine centres for stranded members of the transgender community who are returning to the state amid a nationwide lockdown.

Ngangom Uttam, Director, Social Welfare Department Manipur, in a statement, said two separate quarantine spaces, including a dedicated centre for the trans community have been set up in Imphal — this is possibly the first such instance in the country.
The centre is located at the Government Blind School, Takyelpat in Imphal West district and can accommodate 24 persons. “This facility will accommodate the trans community coming from ‘green zones',” he said.
In addition, a separate wing at the institutional quarantine centre at Maria Montessori School, Koirengei in Imphal East district has been opened to accommodate those coming from ‘red zones’.

Uttam said the government decided to set up separate quarantine centres for the transgender community so as to ensure them emotional security during the pandemic.

“We have come across some instances where transgenders, who have returned to the state recently, have faced inconvenience when accommodated in quarantine centres together either with male and female occupants,” said the director.

Following requests by the community, the health department decided to take action.

The move was welcomed by the state’s transgender community. “The remarkable bit is that Manipur is the first state to do this in the entire region of Northeast India,” said Shanta Khurai, secretary All Manipur Nupi Maanbi Association (AMANA), a prominent association fighting for trans community rights in Manipur. “AMANA would like to express our warm gratitude towards the state for having listened to the needs of the trans community and taken immediate positive action.”

From Friday, transgenders who were housed at different community quarantine centres in the state, will be transferred to the designated centres. About 50 have contacted AMANA so far.

While the current capacity can house up to 40 transgenders, it may be enhanced as per requirement. They can also be quarantined at the community quarantine centres managed by local authorities provided a separate block is allocated.

THIS ONE SOUNDS PROMISING. PLEASE GIVE SOMETIME TO THIS NEWS AND READ IT.
Moderna's vaccine is among the over 100 projects in various stages of development across the world. Its results Monday come at a time when global coronavirus cases are nearing five million. At least 300,000 people have succumbed to the disease. Experts have predicted a vaccine could be ready only in about 12-18 months.

Moderna's vaccine: testing and results

Moderna's vaccine, mRNA-1273, was created using the genetic material of the virus, called mRNA. It was tested on 45 healthy individuals who were between the ages of 18 and 45 in a safety trial. The participants received anywhere between a 25-250 microgram dose of the vaccine.

Eight participants who received two doses of the vaccine -- 25 and 100 mcg -- produced antibodies that could defeat the coronavirus. The antibodies reportedly produced a higher level of protective antibodies than found in the blood of recovered Covid-19 patients.

Some of the participants showed side effects like local pain, redness at the site of injection, and fever -- effects that could be considered a good immunity response.

After the results, the company has dropped the idea of administering 250 mcg doses to participants.

What next?

Moderna has been given permission to begin the second phase of its trial. In a test for its safety and efficacy, the company will begin Phase 11 of its trial, where the vaccine will be administered to 600 participants to find the appropriate dose required to beat the virus. After the company acquired successful results with 25-100 mcg doses, it is expected to test a 50 mcg dose.

A lesser dose of the vaccine would mean a larger quantity available to administer to the population.

In the last phase of the trial, which is likely to begin in July, the vaccine will be tested on thousands of subjects. In this stage, the company will conduct a placebo-controlled study.

The company is looking to receive regulatory approval in 2021.
