Kurung Kumey Rivers: A Tale of Two Sisters

The name Kurung Kumey is derived from two majestic rivers — the Kurung and the Kumey — which traverse through the heart of this enchanting district in Arunachal Pradesh.

According to local folklore, these rivers were once two sisters. When the time came for marriage, Kurung defied her parents and eloped without their consent. In contrast, Kumey respected her family's wishes and was married with their blessings.

As the story goes, the Kurung River flows with a violent roar and an ashy hue, symbolizing the anger of her parents who shouted and threw ashes after her. On the other hand, the Kumey River flows silently, gracefully, and crystal-clear, embodying the peace and joy bestowed upon her by her contented parents.

For this reason, the Kumey River is often seen as more beautiful and serene, admired not just for its clarity but also as a symbol of discipline, harmony, and familial respect.

Where these two rivers meet — their confluence — lies not only a natural wonder but also a powerful metaphor of choices, values, and cultural identity. It is a sacred reminder that nature, too, tells stories of tradition and virtue.
