Lokpeng village in Arunachal Pradesh’s Siang district is now home to an emerging tourism marvel—‘The Ponrung,’ an ancient bat roost cave brimming with natural splendor.
On Friday, Rural Development minister Ojing Tasing officially inaugurated the site, marking a significant step toward promoting eco-tourism in the region.
The inauguration ceremony saw an enthusiastic turnout, including Siang deputy commissioner P N Thungon, district officials, and local residents, all eager to witness the unveiling of this geological wonder.
With its mesmerizing stalactite formations, ‘The Ponrung’ is not just a visual treat but a testament to nature’s artistry.
Recognizing its potential as a prime tourist destination, Minister Tasing, in collaboration with DC Thungon, spearheaded the construction of concrete steps leading to the cave, ensuring safer and easier access for visitors.

Addressing the gathering, Tasing spoke passionately about Lokpeng’s untapped tourism potential. He emphasized that developing ‘The Ponrung’ as a visitor-friendly site would not only attract nature lovers and adventurers but also open up livelihood opportunities for the local community.
He urged the people to embrace conservation efforts, discouraging traditional hunting practices to safeguard the region’s biodiversity.
As a significant boost to the site’s development, Tasing announced an additional ₹20 lakh for beautification, infrastructure enhancements, and improved visitor amenities.

‘The Ponrung’ first gained attention in September 2024, when the Lokpeng Welfare Society (LWS), led by its President Talo Pajing, explored the site and recognized its tourism potential.
Their relentless efforts, along with the support of the local community, have played a pivotal role in preserving and promoting this natural wonder.
The event also saw the submission of a memorandum seeking government support for local infrastructure projects, including the construction of a traditional community hall, repairs to the PMGSY village road, and the establishment of a village organization office for self-help groups.

Beyond ‘The Ponrung,’ Lokpeng boasts several unique attractions that add to its charm. Eling Petkok, a towering upright rock once used as Fortune Prongs, holds historical significance, while Esar Arung, a natural vent, astonishes visitors with its ability to emit warm air in winter and cool air in summer.
Tamte Tokom, a war memorial with hidden caves, and Boki Hidung, a massive rock steeped in ancient folklore, further enrich the village’s cultural and historical landscape.
DC Thungon underscored the role of tourism in strengthening local communities, stating that beyond its natural wonders, Lokpeng’s warmth and hospitality would be instrumental in shaping its success as a tourist hub.
With its stunning landscapes, rich history, and growing commitment to eco-tourism, Lokpeng is poised to become one of Arunachal Pradesh’s most captivating destinations, offering travelers an unforgettable experience steeped in nature, adventure, and tradition.
