Associated with Goddess Kali in Bengali Ta***ic tradition it is said that whenever meat is offered to Goddess, Jackal comes as her representative to devour it. As Dakshinakali, when Goddess stands on Lord Shiva she is accompanied by a jackal along with serpant. As per early Egyptian tradition god associated with mummification and the afterlife – Anubis, is Jackal headed.
Rudyard Kipling in his famous work – The Jungle Book, has shown him as a cowardly animal named Tabaqui. But, Panchatantra story - The Blue Jackal and Indian Fairy Tales story - The Tiger, the Brahmin and the Jackal and in many other Indian folklore they mostly represent smartness, intelligence and wisdom but sometimes are also shown as treacherous.
