Paro Takthsang is devoted to Padmasambhava (also known as Gu-ru mTshan-brgyad Lhakhang, "the Temple of the Guru with Eight Names")
Guru Padmasambhava, commonly known as Guru Rinpoche, visited and sanctified Bhutan in the 8th century when evil spirits were plentiful and harmful to humans.
Legend has it that Guru Rinpoche flew to this site on a tiger plane to submit a local demon. Then he meditated here for three months.
Taktshang Gumba or Tiger's Nest Monastery was blessed and sanctified as one of the holiest religious places in Bhutan.
It hangs on a cliff and stands above a beautiful forest of blue pines and rhododendrons.
