Like any other state in India, the onset of monsoon marks the beginning of festivities in Rajasthan as well. The first festival that celebrates and marks advent of the monsoon is Teej. The season of rains brings in a reason to indulge in celebrations, when people can take a break from the scorching heat and participate in in the festivities with full zeal and life.

The importance of Teej is mainly two-fold: First, as a festival for women, Teej celebrates the victory of a wife's love and devotion for her husband - symbolized by the union of Shiva and Parvati. Second, Teej marks advent of the monsoons - the season of rains brings in a reason to celebrate when people can take a break from the scorching heat. Teej coincides with monsoon season and thus create a greater impact for its celebration.
