Tellement mais vraiment plus que ce que la majorité crois!
Réellement plus que les resorts tout inclus by the beach qui flash dans l’esprit des gens dès qu’ils entendent le mot Mexique.
Every time someone says 'Mexicans are descendants of the Aztecs' — they are erasing 67 other civilizations. 67. Let that sink in. 🤯
Mexico is NOT one culture. Not one people. Not one story. And we are NOT all Aztecs.
Yes, the Aztec Empire was real and powerful. But Mexico's indigenous history is so much BIGGER than one empire.
There are 68 distinct indigenous nations in Mexico. 11 language families. 364 linguistic variants still spoken today. 25 million+ Mexicans identify as indigenous.
Here are just 4 of the 68 nations most people never learned about:
🦌 PURÉPECHA — From Michoacán. One of the ONLY civilizations the Aztec Empire tried to conquer — and FAILED. Their language has no known relatives anywhere on Earth.
⚔️ YAQUI — From Sonora. Fierce warriors who resisted Spanish colonizers, then the Mexican government for centuries. Still here. Still fighting. Still Yaqui.
🌽 MAYA — One of the most advanced civilizations ever — astronomy, mathematics, written language. Still very much alive in Yucatán, Chiapas, and Guatemala today.
🏔️ ZAPOTEC — From Oaxaca. One of the oldest civilizations in all of Mesoamerica — they predate the Aztecs by over 1,000 years. Monte Albán was their city.
And those are just 4. There are also the Otomí, Totonac, Mixtec, Huichol (Wixáritari), Tarahumara (Rarámuri), Tzeltal, Tzotzil, Nahua, Mazatec, Chinantec — and 58 more nations, each with their own language, food, dances, medicine, and memory. 🇲🇽
Mexico officially recognizes 68 indigenous languages — organized into 11 language families and 364 linguistic variants. That makes Mexico one of the most linguistically diverse countries on the entire planet. More diverse than most of Europe combined.
Nearly 60% of those languages are endangered today. When a language dies — a whole world dies with it. 💔
The Purépecha resisted the Aztecs. The Yaqui resisted the Spanish AND the Mexican government for 400 years. The Zapotecs built cities before Rome was powerful. These are not footnotes in Mexican history. They ARE Mexican history.
Which nation did you NOT know about? Drop it in the comments 👇
🦌 Purépecha — I had no idea they stopped the Aztecs
⚔️ Yaqui — 400 years of resistance is incredible
🏔️ Zapotec — older than the Aztecs by 1,000 years?!
😤 I knew all of these — our schools failed everyone else
Share this for every Mexican kid who was only taught about the Aztecs in school. Our roots go deeper than one empire. We are descendants of entire civilizations. 🌎🇲🇽
