ELEPHANTS IN NORTH BENGAL

North Bengal is home to a growing population of wild elephants, with approximately 676 individuals recorded in the 2021-2025 census, up from 488 in 2017, predominantly located in the Eastern Dooars and Terai regions. While the population is increasing, they face threats from habitat fragmentation, train collisions, and electrocution, causing intense human-elephant conflict.

Key Information on North Bengal Elephants:

Population & Distribution: The 676 elephants (as of 2025) are primarily found in the forests of Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Darjeeling districts, particularly within protected areas like Gorumara National Park, Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary, Buxa Tiger Reserve, Jalpaiguri Forest Division, Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, Baikunthapur Forest Division and Jaldapara National Park.
Habitat Fragmentation: The region's elephant habitat is highly fragmented, forcing them to navigate through tea gardens, agricultural fields, and villages, leading to frequent crop-raiding and property damage.

Major Threats:
Human-Elephant Conflict: North Bengal accounts for nearly 12% of India's human deaths caused by elephants, despite holding less than 2% of the total population.
Train Hits: Railway tracks passing through forests (e.g., in the Dooars) are a major cause of elephant fatalities.
Electrocution: Illegal or sagging power lines pose a significant danger.
Conservation Status: The forest department uses around 85 department-trained elephants to aid in patrolling and protecting over 300 rhinoceros in Jaldapara, which also helps manage wild elephant movements.
Behavior: The region has a mix of herd elephants and solitary bull elephants that often move between the forests of North Bengal, Bhutan, and Nepal.
Efforts to mitigate conflict include creating awareness among locals, improving habitat corridors, and patrolling in vulnerable, fragmented forest patches.

Gamira or Gambhira is a traditional folk dance performed in North Bengal, Eastern Bihar, Eastern Nepal, North Bangladesh (Geographical area Eastern part of River Koshi to Western part of River Sankosh). It is performed by the Rajbangshi Kshatriya community to appease the village goddess Gram-Chandi. The dance is usually performed between the months of March and April (Bengali month of CHAITRA).

The masks used in the Gamira dance are made from Gamari wood and symbolize various gods, goddesses, animals and demons. The dancers wear these masks and perform the dance to the beat of dhak and kansar.

There are different opinions about the origin of Gamira dance. Some believe that it originated from the influence of Mahajan Buddhism, while others believe that it originated from the influence of Shakta Dharma.
