In a major boost to connectivity with the Lakshadweep islands, Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) is set to facilitate trial seaplane operations linking Kochi with multiple island destinations from Wednesday, subject to weather conditions.

The trials are part of an initiative to study the feasibility of launching regular seaplane services to Lakshadweep, a move expected to improve tourism, emergency travel and regional connectivity. The 20-seater Twin Otter seaplane, owned by M/S Skyhope Aviation Limited, will operate on routes including Kochi–Agatti–Kalpeni–Kavaratti and Kochi–Kadmat–Kiltan–Agatti.

Officials said the proposed service could significantly cut travel time to the islands and improve accessibility, especially to destinations that currently depend heavily on ship services. The initiative is also expected to open up new opportunities for sustainable tourism and faster transportation between Kerala and Lakshadweep.

The Lakshadweep administration had first floated tenders for seaplane connectivity in 2019. In 2025, the Union Civil Aviation Ministry included 48 routes in Kerala under the UDAN regional connectivity scheme. Ticket fares for the service are expected to be around Rs 12,000 initially. However, if the routes are brought under the UDAN scheme, fares could come down to between Rs 2,000 and Rs 4,000

അനേകം ഹെയര്‍ പിന്‍ വളവുകളോട് കൂടിയ റോഡിലൂടെ ഉള്ള യാത്ര അതിലും ആനന്ദം. ഇല്ലിക്കല്‍ കല്ല് മൂന്നു പാറ ക്കൂട്ടങ്ങള്‍ ചേര്‍ന്നാണുണ്ടായിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഇതിലെ ഏറ്റവും ഉയരം കൂടിയ പാറ കൂടക്കല്ല് എന്നും തൊട്ടടുത്ത് സര്‍പ്പാ കൃതിയില്‍ കാണപ്പെടുന്ന പാറ കൂനന്‍ കല്ല് എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇവയ്ക്കിടയിലായി 20 അടി താഴ്ചയില്‍ വലിയൊരു വിടവുണ്ട്. ഈ കല്ലില്‍ അരയടി മാത്രം വീതിയുള്ള ‘നരകപാലം’ എന്ന ഭാഗമുണ്ട്. പ്രകൃതിരമണീയമായ ഈ സ്ഥലത്തേക്ക് പുതിയ ഒരു വഴി നിര്‍മ്മിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.സഞ്ചാരികള്‍ക്ക് വലിയ പ്രയാസം കൂടാതെ ഇല്ലിക്കല്‍ കല്ലിലെ ത്താന്‍ ആണ് പുതിയ പാത നിര്‍മിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്.എന്നാല്‍ സാഹസികത കൈമുതല്‍ ആയിട്ടുള്ള സഞ്ചാരികള്‍ കുത്തനെ ഉള്ള കയറ്റം തന്നെ തിരഞ്ഞു എടുക്കുന്നു.

കോട്ടയം ജില്ലയിലെ ഏറ്റവും ഉയരമുള്ളമലയാണ് ഇല്ലിക്കല്‍ കല്ല് എന്ന് പറയാം. മീനച്ചിലാറിന്‍റെ കുഞ്ഞോളങ്ങള്‍ ഇവി ടെയാണ്‌ തുടക്കം കുറിക്കുന്നത് എന്ന് മുന്‍ സഞ്ചാരികള്‍ പറ യുന്നു. ഈരാറ്റുപേട്ടയ്ക്കടുത്ത് തലനാട് പഞ്ചായത്തിലാണ് ഇല്ലിക്കല്‍ കല്ല്‌.മുകള്‍ പരപ്പില്‍ എത്തി ചേര്‍ന്നാല്‍ കാണുന്ന കാഴ്ചകള്‍ നേരില്‍ അനുഭവിച്ചറിയണം .ചുറ്റും പച്ചപ്പ്‌ നിറഞ്ഞ മറ്റു മലകള്‍ .അകലെ നേര്‍ വരയായി വെള്ളി കൊലുസ്സ് കെട്ടി ഒഴുക്കുന്ന അനേക നീര്‍ അരുവികള്‍ .ഈ മലയുടെ ഏതൊക്കെയോ ഭാഗങ്ങളില്‍ അത്യപൂര്‍വമായി കാണുന്ന നീലക്കൊടുവേലി ഉണ്ടെന്ന് താഴ്വരയില്‍ താമസിക്കുന്നവര്‍ വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു .മീനച്ചില്‍ നദിയിലെ കുളിരില്‍ മുങ്ങി നിവര്‍ന്നാല്‍ എല്ലാ തളര്‍ച്ചയും വിട്ടൊഴിയു ന്നതിന്റെ. രഹസ്യം നീല കൊടിവേലിയുടെ ഇലകളില്‍ തട്ടി വരുന്ന ജലം ആണെന്ന് പറയുന്നു. മലയുടെ മുകളില്‍ നിന്നും നോക്കിയാല്‍ അങ്ങ് കിഴക്കന്‍ ചക്രവാളത്തിലെ ഉദയവും പടിഞ്ഞാറന്‍ തീരത്തെ അസ്തമയവും കാണാം. അറബി കടലിന്‍റെ വിദൂര കാഴ്ച ക്യാമറ കണ്ണുകള്‍ ഒപ്പിയെ ടുത്ത് കൂടുതല്‍ കാഴ്ചകള്‍ സമ്മാനിക്കും .
മൂന്നിലവ് തലനാട് പഞ്ചായത്തുകള്‍ അതിരിടുന്ന ഇല്ലിക്കല്‍ കല്ല്‌ കാണുവാന്‍ ഉള്ള സഞ്ചാരികളുടെ അടങ്ങാത്ത ആവേശം ആണ് ഇവളെ കേരളത്തിന്‍റെ വിനോദ സഞ്ചാര ഭൂപടത്തില്‍ സ്ഥാനം നല്‍കുന്നത്.
