मसरूर मंदिर (Masroor Temple)
The Ellora of Himachal
The Masroor Temple is carved out of a single sandstone rock, and is a remarkable example of early medieval North Indian temple architecture. The temple complex consists of 15 rock-cut temples, arranged around a rectangular water pond, reflecting the temples’ intricate carvings in its still waters. The main shrine, which houses the idols of Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita, stands at the centre, while the other temples form a protective circle around it.
The architectural style of the Masroor Temple shows influences from both Nagara and Dravidian traditions, yet it stands unique in its ex*****on. The temple’s exterior is adorned with finely detailed sculptures and intricate carvings depicting various deities, mythological scenes, and floral patterns. The precision with which the rock was carved, along with the elaborate detailing, suggests that this was a place of great religious and cultural significance during its time.
