Premier François Legault has introduced new measures to restrict the number of temporary immigrants in Quebec, particularly in Montreal, due to concerns about preserving the French language. Starting September 3, 2024, a six-month freeze on applications and renewals for the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) will take effect. Legault described this as “a first step.”
The number of non-permanent residents in Quebec has risen by 42% in the past year, leading to these new restrictions. However, sectors like construction, food processing, and jobs with salaries above Quebec’s median wage of $57,000 will be exempt from the freeze.
The Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal has expressed concerns, warning that the freeze could negatively impact small businesses already facing challenges in recruitment and retention.
Do you believe this is the right approach, and should other provinces consider similar measures?
