₹80 for a tender coconut in Kerala?!” 🥥😳
This is a common question asked by tourists visiting Kerala from North India: “Kerala has so many coconut trees! Shouldn’t tender coconuts be cheaper here?” 🤔
Here’s what we have to tell them! 🥥
The coconuts grown in Kerala aren’t even enough to meet the state’s own demand. Most coconuts are used to make coconut oil and for everyday cooking in our homes. Tender coconuts are not commonly sold as a separate commercial product in Kerala.
The tender coconuts you see being sold here mostly come from Tamil Nadu, where farmers cultivate coconut trees specifically for tender coconuts as a commercial crop.
So, even though Kerala has plenty of coconut trees, that doesn’t necessarily mean tender coconuts will be cheaper here! 🌴🥥
