Runway re-carpeting: Daytime flights to be rescheduled
from NOV 20
As the mandatory runway re-carpeting work of Kochi airport is slated in November, Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) has instructed all the operating airlines to re-schedule their daytime services for four months from 20th November. The major re-carpeting work will start on 20th November 2019 and continue till 28th March 2020. There will be no flight operation from 10am to 6pm in that period. The daytime flights will be re-scheduled to the night.
As per the prescribed practices, all airports should re-carpet their runways once in around 10 years. Kochi airport had started commercial operations in 1999 and its runway underwent first re-carpeting in 2009. This is the second re-carpeting work fixed for the 3400M long and 60 M wide runway and will cost Rs 151 Cr. The work includes re-tarring, maintenance and overhauling of the entire stretch of the runway, taxiway, etc. The daily re-tarred portion has to be prepared for aircraft operation by the time the runway is handed back for the operation.
During the course of re-carpeting of the runway, the AGL (Airfield Ground Lighting ) system will be upgraded to CAT III from Existing CAT I. This will considerably improve the operational efficiency and Aerodrome safety especially during low visibility and adverse weather conditions. As a part of CAT III lighting system, the spacing of existing runway centreline lights will be reduced from existing 30 meters to 15 meters and the runway will be provided touch down zone lighting and approach side row lighting.
CIAL has already intimated the airlines to re-schedule the timetable for the period so as to provide the passengers who book in advance with the updated schedule. At present CIAL is handling 240 aircraft movements a day. As the majority of international flights operate from 6pm to 9am, the re-carpeting is not going to affect the international traffic in a big way. But around 35 of the domestic services have to be re-scheduled.

കൊച്ചി വിമാനത്താവളത്തിലെ റൺവെയുടെ റീ-കാർപ്പറ്റിങ് പ്രവർത്തനം നവമ്പറിൽ തുടങ്ങും. പത്തുവർഷം കൂടുമ്പോൾ ചെയ്തിരിക്കേണ്ട റൺവെ നവീകരണ ജോലികൾ തുടങ്ങുന്നതിനാൽ നവമ്പർ 20 മുതൽ നാലുമാസത്തേയ്ക്ക് കൊച്ചി വിമാനത്താവളത്തിൽ നിന്ന് പകൽ സർവീസുകൾക്ക് നിയന്ത്രണം ഏർപ്പെടുത്തി.
ഈ കാലയളവിലെ പകൽ സമയ സർവീസുകൾ രാത്രിയിലേയ്ക്ക് മാറ്റും.
1999-ലാണ് കൊച്ചി വിമാനത്താവളം ഉദ്ഘാടനം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടത്. 2009-ൽ ആദ്യ റൺവെ റീ-കാർപ്പറ്റിങ് നടന്നു. 2019-ൽ രണ്ടാം റീ-കാർപ്പറ്റിങ് തുടങ്ങണം. 2019 നവമ്പർ 20 മുതൽ 2020 മാർച്ച്-28 വരെയുള്ള കാലയളവിലാണ് ഈ ജോലികൾ നിശ്ചയിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുള്ളത്. രാവിലെ പത്തുമുതൽ വൈകീട്ട് ആറുവരെയാകും നിർമാണ പ്രവർത്തനം നടക്കുക. 3400 മീറ്റർ നീളവും 60 മീറ്റർ വീതിയുമുള്ള റൺവെയിൽ ഓരോഭാഗത്തും റീടാറിങ് നടത്തും. ടാറിങ് നടത്തിയ സ്ഥലം മണിക്കൂറുകളിൽക്കുള്ളിൽ ലാൻഡിങ്ങിന് സജ്ജമാക്കുകയും വേണം. നിലവിൽ കാറ്റഗറി-വൺ റൺവെ ലൈറ്റിങ് സംവിധാനമാണ് സിയാലിനുള്ളത്. ഇത് കാറ്റഗറി-ത്രീയിലേയ്ക്ക് ഉയർത്തും. റൺവെയിൽ 30 മീറ്റർ അകലത്തിലാണ് ലൈറ്റുകൾ സ്ഥാപിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളത്. ഇത് 15 മീറ്ററാക്കും. 1500-ൽ അധികം പുതിയ ലൈറ്റുകൾ സ്ഥാപിക്കുന്ന പ്രവർത്തനവും നടത്തേണ്ടതുണ്ട്. രാവിലെ പത്തുമുതൽ വൈകീട്ട് ആറ് വരെ വിമാന ടേക ്-ഓഫ്/ലാൻഡിങ് പ്രക്രിയ നടത്താനാകില്ല. ഈ സമയത്തുള്ള എല്ലാ സർവീസുകളും വൈകീട്ട് ആറ് മുതൽ രാവിലെ 10 വരെയുള്ള സമയത്തേയ്ക്ക് പുനക്രമീകരിക്കാൻ എയർലൈനുകളോട് സിയാൽ ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്. യാത്രക്കാർ മുൻകൂട്ടി ടിക്കറ്റ് ബുക്ക് ചെയ്യുന്ന സാഹചര്യം പരിഗണിച്ചാണ് ഇതുസംബന്ധിച്ച നിർദേശം സിയാൽ, എയർലൈനുകൾക്ക് മുൻകുറായി നൽകിയിട്ടുള്ളത്. 151 കോടി രൂപയാണ് റൺവെ-റീകാർപ്പറ്റിങ് ജോലികൾക്ക് ചെലവ് കണക്കാക്കിയിട്ടുള്ളത്.
പ്രതിദിനം ശരാശരി 240 ടേക് ഓഫ്/ ലാൻഡിങ് കൊച്ചി വിമാനത്താവളത്തിൽ നടക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. രാജ്യാന്തര സർവീസുകളിൽ ഭൂരിഭാഗവും നിലവിൽ തന്നെ വൈകീട്ട് അറ് മുതൽ രാവിലെ 10 വരെയാണ്. 35 ആഭ്യന്തര സർവീസുകൾ പുതിയ സമയക്രമത്തിലേയ്ക്ക് മാറേണ്ടിവരും.
