Have you heard of driftwood—those pieces of wood shaped by sea waves and carried ashore by tidal currents?
What if we told you there's an entire museum dedicated to this natural art form in Kumarakom?
On your next trip to Kerala, don’t miss a visit to the Bay Island Driftwood Museum. Curated by Mrs. Raji Punnoose, the museum showcases an extraordinary collection of driftwood sculptures she began collecting during her posting in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Each piece was selected for its unique, organic shape. Back home, she would carefully clean and trim away loose twigs and roots to reveal the natural forms hidden within.
Her work is a beautiful reminder of the slogan “Best from Waste” and the promise of sustainable art in the years to come.

Marayoor: Kerala’s Hidden Time Capsule.

Tucked away beyond the crowded hill stations, where the wind whispers through ancient sandalwood forests, lies Marayoor—a place where history and nature entwine. Unlike its bustling neighbor Munnar, Marayoor remains untouched by overtourism, preserving secrets that date back thousands of years.

We arrived at dawn, the mist still clinging to the hills. The air was scented with the earthy aroma of sandalwood trees, a fragrance both soothing and surreal. But beyond its lush landscapes, Marayoor holds something even more extraordinary—Muniyara and Ezhuthupara, silent storytellers of Kerala’s prehistoric past.

At Muniyara, time stands still. Scattered across the hills, these dolmenoid burial chambers—massive stone structures built by ancient tribes—whisper of civilizations lost to time. Standing beside them, we imagined the hands that once shaped these megaliths, marking their place in history.

Then, deeper into the forest, we reached Ezhuthupara, a rock shelter where the past is painted onto stone. Prehistoric cave art, etched in ochre and charcoal, reveals glimpses of early human life—scenes of hunting, rituals, and stories untold. Here, every mark on the rock is a message from a forgotten era, a testament to the rich, untamed history of the Western Ghats.

Marayoor is more than a scenic escape; it is a sanctuary for history, culture, and sustainable travel. With each footstep on these ancient trails, we tread gently—preserving, not disturbing. For those who seek the extraordinary beyond the usual tourist trails, Marayoor offers something rare: a journey through time itself.

On scented trail: A Fragrant Voyage Through Time

Long before the air was filled with synthetic perfumes, the world’s most enchanting scents traveled across deserts and seas in tiny glass vials. These were *attars*—precious oils distilled from nature’s finest blossoms, woods, and spices. And India, particularly Kerala, became a treasure trove for these timeless fragrances.

The story begins with the Arab traders, who sailed to Kerala’s shores long before the Mughal empire adorned India. Laden with silks, spices, and the coveted attars, they brought not only trade but also the art of perfumery. Kerala’s flourishing spice gardens—cinnamon, cardamom, and vetiver—soon became integral ingredients in crafting exotic scents.

When the Mughal rulers arrived, they elevated attars to an art form, weaving them into courtly rituals and royal lifestyles. Inspired by Persian and Arabian perfumery, they combined Kerala’s natural bounty with their refined techniques. Attars weren’t just fragrances; they were symbols of luxury, spirituality, and even medicine, used to soothe the senses and purify the soul.

In Kerala, the Islamic connection deepened the bond with attars. Mosques and homes embraced these oils for prayers and celebrations, blending their fragrance with the coastal breeze. The tradition continues today, with Kerala still holding onto the legacy of this fragrant past.

Every drop of attar carries a piece of history—a fragrant reminder of how the world’s cultures mingled, traded, and flourished.

Onam festival is more than a celebration—it’s a reflection of the harmony between us and the world around us. From the vibrant Onakodi (new clothes) to the intricately designed Athapookkalam (floral carpets), from the rich flavors of the Onam Sadya to the exhilarating Pulikali and Snake Boat Races—every element of nature plays its part in this grand tradition.

Take the Athapookkalam, for instance—more than just a beautiful arrangement of flowers, it symbolizes our unity with nature. Each bloom, carefully selected from native and often endangered species, is a nod to the earth’s bounty. The delicate Thumba (Leucas Aspera), a symbol of purity, along with Tulsi, Krishnakireedam, Hibiscus, and Mukkutti, forms a vibrant carpet that celebrates Kerala’s floral heritage. Every Athapookkalam is a testament to our connection with nature, an eco-friendly tribute to the forgotten flowers of our land.

As the monsoon clouds drift away, Kerala’s backwaters come alive with the Snake Boat Races—a thrilling spectacle where the rhythmic beat of oars and unified chants echo through the waters. It’s a powerful celebration of our natural waterways, a moment that unites people in joy and tradition.

Just as we dress in vibrant colors for Onam, nature, too, adorns Kerala in its own breathtaking palette. Let’s come together to celebrate this season by honoring our roots, cherishing our natural heritage, and strengthening the bonds that connect us with each other and the world around us. 🌼🌿✨

**A Monsoon Tale: Embracing the Unexpected** 🌧️✨

Sometimes, the true magic in travel lies in embracing the unpredictable. I recently had the privilege of exploring Kerala’s Western Ghats with a group of friends from Andhra Pradesh, who have cherished their bond for over 36 years. Their spirit of adventure was contagious as they opted to experience Kerala during the monsoon, a season often avoided due to its heavy rains and landslides.

Our plans to trek were disrupted by the weather, but this opened the door to unexpected discoveries. With no fixed itinerary, we ventured into hidden gems guided by our local friend Vishnu, indulging in authentic toddy and a meal I’ll never forget—tapioca and beef “Asiad.” 🌿🍲

The monsoon-draped Western Ghats revealed waterfalls, foggy hills, and a thrilling tiger trail trek in Periyar. This adventure close to home reignited my appreciation for the beauty right at our doorstep.

The journey was filled with laughter, exploration, and soul-stirring moments. It’s a reminder that sometimes the best experiences are the ones that find you when you least expect them. 🌄💚

Timeless icons of Kerala’s coast, the Chinese fishing nets, or "Cheena Vala," have stood tall since the 14th century, a gift from Chinese explorers during the era of Kublai Khan. These wooden marvels, unique in design, require precision and teamwork to haul in the daily catch. Beyond their functionality, they’ve become a stunning symbol of Kerala's rich history, blending culture and commerce. 🌊✨

Despite the challenges of modern times, these nets remain a proud reminder of Kerala’s global trade legacy, especially as the sun sets behind them in Fort Kochi.
