Kerala houseboat trip provides a fascinating glimpse into these everyday activities. It feels like a journey through another world as you glide past homes, paddy fields, coconut groves, churches, temples, toddy shops and wildlife.

An overnight stay aboard a houseboat will further reward you with a surreal sunset reflected on the water. Delicious Keralan food, freshly cooked on board the boat, makes it even more enjoyable.

Most houseboats are quite comfortable with living rooms, dining rooms, modern amenities, air-conditioning, and en-suit bathrooms. Expect all your meals to be cooked for you by an onboard chef. Mostuseboats will ask you to specify whether you want vegetarian or non-vegetarian meals before setting off.

Took a day cruise over the waters of Alappuzha lakes and canals. The experience was simply marvelous as we gently glided along the labyrinth of natural canals, lakes and deltas observing natural sights and local water based village life with children ferried to schools, women boarding small boats for their household shopping trips, fishing activities both by fishermen in small boats and kingfishers and storks, farming in vast stretches of paddy fields, age old churches and temples enroute the waterway, while enjoying the ethnic homely cuisine prepared on the boat. The boat had a nice sunbathing area and a bedroom as well with well maintained showers and bathroom.

Tourism continues to be one of the sectors hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic and the outlook remains highly uncertain. During the peak season for tourism industry which sees hundreds of travellers flocking to popular destinations. The Lighthouse, beaches, museum and its palaces make the city a coveted destination for tourists.

However, with the world in the grip of a global pandemic and the resultant lockdown in the country, this season paints a bleak picture. Hotels, resorts, lodges and tour operators drivers are staring at an uncertain future with little or no business for months.

I’m hopeful that a new, slower tourism will emerge but the recovery needs to be slow enough for the industry to make the right decisions as it rises from the ashes.

COVID-19 has taken its toll on the vibrant hospitality industry. Tourist arrivals have seen a sharp decline and the tourism industry has faced job cuts and low margins. With holidayers preferring not to travel, online portals have been badly hit.

Things needed to change. It’s an opportunity for everyone from tourist boards to tour operators to reset and to look at how things can be better – for the planet, for local communities and for travellers.
