Architect- Mindscape Architects

The 250-year-old heritage ettukettu Tharavad at Thycattussery embodies a harmonious blend of nature and architecture, with expansive courtyards, open verandas, and traditional landscape elements seamlessly integrated into its design. Such homes are more than just dwellings — they are cultural repositories where generations lived, celebrated festivals, and followed age-old traditions tied to Kerala’s agrarian lifestyle. The primary intent of this project was to preserve the traditional ambiance and revive the emotional connection to the client’s childhood memories. Our architectural design approach is deeply rooted in honoring the past while thoughtfully shaping the present. Every design decision was guided by a commitment to preserve the soul of the space, ensuring that the essence of the original home was not only maintained but lovingly reawakened. Long covered corridors run along the front, providing a transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. Intricate columns, decorative brackets, and carved gables reflect the craftsmanship passed down through generations. The existing landscape, including age-old trees and native flora, was carefully protected and integrated into the new design to preserve the site's natural heritage. These elements are not just part of the environment, but they also hold emotional and symbolic significance for the family. The courtyards, positioned at the heart of the home and varying in size, have been thoughtfully retained to enhance natural light and ventilation. They create a strong visual and spatial connection across the house, fostering a seamless integration between the built spaces and the natural environment. These elements add to the grandeur and legacy of the residence, making it a living tribute to Kerala’s timeless architectural sensibilities.

Fascinating centuries old Indo Portuguese language continuous to exist in Kerala

In Geetanjali Shree’s Booker-winning novel Tomb of Sand is a passing mention of a language in Kerala’s Vypeen that disappeared from the world. It should not have been much of a surprise that a creole – a language formed by a mix of European and local languages – existed in Kochi, once ruled ...
