Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, 'Wow! Thompson

… find out what it means to me.

I wonder if most bikers remember their first salute. I know I sure do. It was my second or third day of riding on actual roads, not just the parking lot of the Black Hills Harley Davidson where I took my motorcycle safety course.

I was popping just around the corner to the grocery store to run a quick errand. And I looked ahead down the road and saw an electric yellow Ducati heading my way. It looked so cool, so powerful, as if it were demanding all of the attention of the road… And here I was a little novice on my Honda Rebel.

I was still dealing with some hefty imposter syndrome at this point and didn’t feel like I was really I biker. But never the less I stuck my two fingers out and down towards the road. And my heart actually jumped with excitement as we passed each other and he returned the gesture. I don’t know this guy, and will probably never know him. But I felt accepted by him.

I still get the same feeling every time I salute a fellow rider. We’re saying to each other, “I see you. I understand you. I respect you.” That feeling is oftentimes enough to keep that motor running.
