Chandan Nagar was first under the rule of the Nawabs, then the reigns shifted to the French. With the arrival of the British, Chandan Nagar changed thrones many times between French and British until finally it merged with the State of West Bengal at the time of independence. Owing to a turbulent and colorful history, Chandan Nagar has traces of various national and foreign influences. A trip to this small town isn't just relaxing and calming, it's like seeing a bit of past in the future.

CHANDERNAGORE TOUR
Known as Europe along the River Hooghly (certain local companies offer a Ganges cruise), this town’s European roots date back to 1673 when Duplessis, the first French settler, landed on its shores and became its commander. Chandannagar, formerly known as Chandernagor, was ruled by the French until 1950. Even today, if you stroll through the city, the French influence is evident in a building called The Strand which runs along the riverbank. Also known for its terracotta temples, the city has the Boro Shvtala area, which houses a spectacular nine-pinnacled temple. It has a triple-arch entrance on two sides along with intricate terracotta panels, and houses a giant Shiva linga. Take time out to explore the collection of French memorabilia at the Institut de Chandernagor.

For a first-hand experience of the local culture, catch the Jagadhatri Puja, a well-known sociocultural event here, celebrated since the 1750s. A form of Durga, this four-handed goddess symbolises power and triumph of good over evil. As a quick getaway or an en-route diversion, Chandernagor is surrounded by some other cities with European roots. For a touch of the rich, intellectual and artistic Danish culture, a former colony, Frederiksnagore, now Serampore, makes for the perfect short trip. Chinsurah, a forgotten Dutch abode, is known for The District Court Building of Chinsurah — the longest in the state. Bandel is an erstwhile town where the taste of Portuguese culture can be experienced in the form of the dry, smoky-flavoured Bandel cheese that originated here.

The Tagore Factor
Patal Bari is an underground house from the colonial period. The lowest floor being submerged in the river, it is said that Rabindranath Tagore spent some time here. A unique example of architectural advancement in the country, the house is over 100 years old and reflects upon French culture with a Bengali twist.

If you want a taste of old French architecture and are a history buff, Chandannagar is a must visit. Winter is definitely preferable time.

On the 22nd of June 2015, some of us "Chandernagorians" assembled at Prabartak Samgha to celebrate the 127th birth anniversary of "Samgha Janani" Radharani Debi, worthy spouse and companion of "Samgha Guru" Motilal Roy. Radharani Debi was the Mother to 108 freedom fighters who were her ardent followers and who believed her to be "Bharat Mata" or "Bharat Janani" incarnate! Radharani Debi inspired and motivated her "children" who were to fight for freedom of their Motherland, and with her blessings they went forth with their activities to protest against the atrocities of British rule over their beloved Motherland, as fearless & daring as ever! The Mother used to cook for all the freedom fighters who took shelter at the "Samgha" and tend to all their needs. Her self-sacrifice was tremendous. Her steadfast dedication, her affection and her infinite capacity to morally strengthen the "Biplabis" who were ready to sacrifice themselves for their Motherland, are unimaginable ! Sri Aurobindo saw in her the image of "Ma Kali" Herself! Among the 108 freedom fighters were Kanailal Dutta, Dinesh Majumdar, Basanta Biswas, Charu Chandra Roy, Ullas Kar, to name but a few! Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Rashbehari Bose, Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, besides many eminent Indians, visited "Samgha Janani" and her residence which became "Prabartak Samgha". To the people of Chandernagore & to all Indians, this is a pilgrimage where Sri Aurobindo confined himself in total isolation before leaving for Pondicherry! It is here from where four freedom fighters were taken to be hanged until death, among whom Kanailal Dutta who had his last meal lovingly cooked by this great lady! This place is a must visit to all Indians and our young generation should be encouraged to visit and know about the place! Otherwise, how would they learn about the price which these selfless fellow Indians had to pay so that we may live in peace? --- By Proff. Bashobi Pal
