ll Phuleshwari and Her Battle of Motherhood ll

The famous writer Agatha Christie once wrote: “A mother’s love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity, it dares all things and crushes down remorselessy all that stands in its path.” After spending 12 years in the mangrove forests of the Sundarbans, I never imagined I would see this truth come alive so powerfully before my eyes.
Due to health reasons, I hadn't been to the Sundarbans for several months. However, on January 23, 2026, I returned to the forest at the request of my team. Even now, while my tours are continuously running in the Sundarbans, I am not always able to be physically present there. However, my wonderful Sundarbans team is managing everything perfectly on my behalf, ensuring every guest has a great experience.
It was a special day—Netaji’s birthday, Saraswati Puja and my first day of this season. I was accompanied by 12 members of Mumbai’s prestigious wildlife group.

Around 11:00 AM, as our boat entered the creeks, we heard news of a male tiger. We searched for a few hours but found nothing. Little did we know that nature had a much more dramatic script waiting for us. Soon, we received word that a tigress with two cubs had been spotted moving toward a second canal.
At around 1:30 PM, the "Natural History" drama began.
Before us stood the Queen of the Sundarbans—the tigress Phuleshwari. With her were two tiny cubs, barely five months old. At that age, crossing a salty, tidal creek is a huge challenge. The presence of several tourist boats and the sound of engines made the little ones even more terrified.
Phuleshwari, however, was a picture of determination. She is a brave tigress, unafraid of boats. She tried to lead her cubs across the water three times. Each time, she would swim gracefully to the middle of the creek and look back to see if they were following. But the cubs, frightened by the surroundings, would swim halfway and then run back to the shore. Phuleshwari kept returning to them, as if whispering, "Don't be afraid, I am here." Watching this struggle of a mother made our hearts race.
At 2:30 PM, the drama reached its peak. Phuleshwari crossed to the other side alone, hoping her presence there would encourage the cubs to follow. But the opposite happened. The mother was on one side, and the helpless cubs were on the other.
Then, the silence of the forest was broken by a sound I had never heard in 12 years—the "crying" of a tigress. She began to call out to her cubs with a deep, mournful ache. She would peek out from the bushes, searching desperately for them.
The scene was so emotional that two guests in my group burst into tears. One of them said, "Sumit Da, if we stay here, they will never be able to cross. As mothers, we cannot bear to see this. Let’s leave." We realized that our curiosity was becoming a threat to their survival. Every boat in the area made a collective decision: we would leave the spot to honor this rare moment of nature. After waiting 15 minutes and seeing that the cubs were still too scared to jump, Phuleshwari swam back across the creek to her children. At that moment, we moved our boats away, giving them the privacy and safety they needed to cross.

In my 12 years here, I have never seen such a dramatic sighting. Even guides with 23 years of experience said they had never witnessed such a human side of a tigress. Phuleshwari taught us that day that love and motherly instinct know no boundaries—whether human or wild.

(I haven't been very active on social media lately, but I will soon share another experience from the very next day, January 24th, about sighting a massive male tiger.)
