The biggest plane in the world to fly across 3 continents

The biggest airplane in the world is ready to take flight on a rare delivery mission across three continents. Undisputed superstar of the skies, the Ukrainian cargo jet named “Mriya” is one of a kind. The gawkers were all around in Prague when this huge aircraft defied gravity before it touched down at Vaclav Havel Airport in the Czech Republic.

The plane was developed in the 1980s to carry the Soviet version of the space shuttle on its back and was officially designated as the Antonov An-225. After the end of the shuttle program, the plane morphed into the world’s coolest flying moving van.

The workers in Prague will load Mriya with a generator weighing 130 tons for delivery to Australia.

So, what is so special about this plane?

Most airliners are powered by two or four jet engines, while this one is equipped with six. The wingspan measures 88 meters (290 feet) which makes it longer than five 53-foot semi-truck trailers set end-to-end. Mriya’s cargo hold is actually longer than the Wright Brothers’ historic flight in 1903. At takeoff, its maximum total weight is 640 tons, which is twice as heavy as the Statue of Liberty.

Like the way its nose opens to allow cargo loading through the front end is a beauty in itself! Mriya’s split tail is also a thing to appreciate.

It’s rare to see it in action. However, lately, Mriya has been making deliveries once or twice a year.

This is the plane you would want when there is the need to deliver gargantuan oil industry equipment or a giant electric generator.

The An-225 holds world aviation records for flying heavy payloads. It set one in 2004 when it flew a 247-ton piece of oil pipeline machinery to Uzbekistan.

From its pickup location in Prague, Mriya has scheduled stops in Turkmenistan, India and Malaysia before arriving this weekend at its final destination in Perth — on Australia’s west coast. The plane and its six-member crew will be greeted with thousands of spectators when it will arrive.

It will then be back to home base in Kiev where planners will chalk up another “mission accomplished” for the biggest plane in the world.

Visit Kerala itinerary to add Kerala Boat League this year

Kerala Tourism has added a new event to its tourism calendar. The Kerala Boat League (KBL), on the lines of Indian Premier League (IPL), will be the main attraction of Kerala Tourism’s extended Visit Kerala Year.

Though the authorities are leaving the field open to the next Tourism Minister, the ground work has commenced to attract more audience far and wide.

Six boat races will be held as part of the KBL in August, October, December and February before the extended Visit Kerala Year ends in April 2017.

The United Nations World Tourism Organisation Secretary General will be the chief guest at the inaugural of the KBL boat races — two each in Ernakulam, Ashtamudi Lake and Alappuzha — to be held by a society to be set up under Kerala Tourism, according to official sources.

Kerala has decided to make its presence felt in the Beijing International Tourism Expo (BITE) 2016 that is commencing on May 20.

The encouraging response to the maiden roadshow at Shanghai and participation in the BITE 2015 in July last is behind the decision to aggressively market Kerala in China. China will be the focus source market for Kerala in the days ahead as part of this strategy, the official said.

The authorities are working towards carving a niche tourism product by giving the KBL tag to the boat races to offset the dip in the growth of the tourist arrivals. The Visit Kerala initiative is being extended by another year from April 2016 in view of the not-so encouraging response to the marketing drive and criticism from stakeholders that the initiative was launched without adequate ground work.

Yellow weather to give a red eye to UK

Citizens of UK has been warned by the Met office about a yellow weather which could result in the sudden drop of temperature and a heavy downpour of up to 25mm from 10th May to 11th May.

From Penzance in Cornwall to Kent in the south-east, from Wales to Aberystwyth; the toasty warm weather is being swept off by Atlantic air-flow. The Met officials specially warned the drivers to be cautious about the sleek and frosty roads. At present, there is no presence of any strong wind, which could keep people stuck under a heavy shower for a long time. Although rivers are not going to overflow, but the drains could get clogged by massive amount of water and snow. This can result in slow traffic flow in some places.

The weather is going to be replaced by the cool breeze from the Atlantic and the warmth is going to get pushed away towards Scotland for the entire week. By Thursday and Friday, Aberdeen and Nottingham is going to see a temperature drop up to 11C and the rural places around Newcastle are expected to experience a frosty weather. The southern corner of UK is going to face a 13C temperature while the south-west and London is hoping to experience a 19C, which dropped at least eight degrees lower overnight. In some corners of UK, the citizens are about to face temperature below freezing point.

Officials informed that Saturday and Sunday will be a little drier except for a little patchy shower near East Anglia and the south coast.

Mt. Everest defaced by Chinese tourists

It’s Chinese in the news again and for the wrong reasons. This time they have added the Mt.Everest in their list of defacing. They have been defacing historical monuments in the past. They have left graffiti and doodles on tablets trying to spoil the beauty of the place.

China will introduce a blacklist system to name and shame errant tourists who are responsible in defacing Mt. Everest.

From this year Gu Chunlei, deputy head of the tourism bureau of Tibets Tingri county said that they are planning to set up a blacklist system where badly behaved tourists who are so many will be punished. The blacklist will also be made public through media outlets.

May is a busy tourist season at the Everest known as Mt Qomolangma, in Tibet and there is a huge inflow of tourists in the Base Camp. The total number of trips to the Base Camp topped 40,000 in 2015 and an average of 550 trips were made every day during the busy season.

With Nepal being not such a favoured destination any more Tibet has taken a lot of the load. Everest saw over 4.3 million tourists mostly Chinese visiting the site. In the first eight months of 2015 the region saw huge revenue of USD 3 billion.

Some visitors have left tablets at the camp and a viewing platform at the entrance of Jiawula Pass covered with doodles.

The Everest base camp is at a height of 5,200 meters above sea level which allows campers to take rest. The online photos show that the tablets are covered with doodles, mostly signatures of the climbers who were there with some personal messages. Gu Chunlei, has felt this need to meet this tourist demand and he has plans of introducing separately set up tablets for graffiti.

23 tornadoes rip across Oklahoma and middle America.

The threat of severe thunderstorms, including tornadoes, expanded into the Ohio Valley into Tuesday night. Reports warned residents and tourists that storms would ignite over parts of central Texas and in portions of Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and West Virginia into Tuesday night.

At least two people are confirmed dead after tornadoes destroyed homes, overturned vehicles and stripped the bark from trees as they churned across Oklahoma, USA, part of a strong series of storms that hit the Plains.

Kentucky State Police said that at least 10 people were hurt during severe storms that spawned a tornado. The statement says the tornado travelled into the city of Mayfield, causing “significant” damage to homes and businesses. Initial reports are that 10 people were taken to a hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.

The potential for severe thunderstorms, including isolated tornadoes will extend from west-central Texas to southern Iowa and western Illinois at midweek.

The storms destroyed a radio station building in Coal County and an undetermined number of homes in Murray, Garvin and Johnston counties have been damaged as reported by The Oklahoma office of emergency management.

The National Weather Service said a tornado touched down in central Iowa, with no immediate reports of damage, and another hit near Nehawka, Nebraska, about 30 miles south of Omaha. Massive hail fell in parts of Lincoln, damaging cars and other property.
