The extreme, tidal dynamics of the Sundarbans force terrestrial animals to completely reinvent their survival strategies. In a forest where the ground disappears underwater twice a day and freshwater is scarce, conventional behaviors like ground grazing simply aren’t viable.

Why Deer Browsing Replaces Grazing?

Spotted deer (chital) in terrestrial forests are predominantly grazers that feed on low-lying grasses. In the Sundarbans, they have adapted into active upward browsers due to three harsh ecological constraints:

2. Lack of Ground Grass: Daily high tides flood the forest floor with saline, brackish water. Typical land grasses cannot survive in salt-soaked soil, leaving the forest bed largely devoid of edible green carpets.

3. Pneumatophore “Pegs”: The ground is densely covered with sharp, upright breathing roots (pneumatophores) protruding from the mud. This makes sweeping ground-level foraging awkward and physically hazardous.

4. Nutrient-Rich Foliage: Deer turn to salt-tolerant mangrove canopy species like Sonneratia apetala (Keora) and Avicennia (Bain). To reach the tender, nutrient-dense leaves and fruits, deer rearing up on their hind legs is a common sight.
Symbiosis with Macaques: Rhesus macaques foraging in the canopy inadvertently drop leaves, flowers, and fruits, which deer gather below in a well-established inter-species partnership.
