The shikra (Accipiter badius) is a small bird of prey in the family Accipitridae found widely distributed in Asia and Africa where it is also called the little banded goshawk.
They are usually seen singly or in pairs. The flight is typical with flaps and glides.

The word Shikra is borrowed from the Urdu word (شِـكْـره) which is derived from the word shikari (شِكارى) meaning hunter.

Interesting fact: An Indian Navy helicopter base was named INS Shikra in 2009.
