Paravur, situated on the southernmost part of Kollam District beside the Arabian Sea, is a veritable Kerala in miniature and is gifted with unique representative features - sea, lakes, plains, rivers, backwaters, vast green fields . Paravur is the third Municipal Town in Kollam District. It is in Kollam Parliament Constituency and Chathanoor Legislative Constituency. Paravur is one of the beautiful place in the district with its beach and its cultural heritage. Arabian Sea is the west border for Paravur. Coir, Cashew, Fishing and Bricks are the important industries. Paravur backwater is very famous for its natural beauty. of Kerala recently started some projects to explore this beauty with their Tourism Package. Paravoor is well connected by road and rail. The soil is richly fertile for the growth of plants, coconut, arecnut , tapioca etc. It has low lying fields fit for the cultivation of paddy and high lands suitable for the cultivation of other crops. Ithikkara river flows to the Paravur lake carrying abundant water for all seasons to meet the requirement of all people of Paravur. Paravur lake , Ithikkara river and Arabian sea altogether makes it suitable for fishing , and the sea shores are inhabited by fishermen. As it is a low lying area natural calamities like flood and cyclone and even tsunami does not effect this place as excess water will flow freely to Arabian Sea through the Estuary ( called Pozhi).The Paravur Lake covers around 662.46 hectares.
