Shodashopachara Puja Vidhi — the Vedic way of doing the puja. Shodashopachara means sixteen offerings.

It begins with Avahana — inviting him in — followed by Asana, a seat; Padya and Arghya, water for his feet and hands; Achamana, purification; and Snana, a ceremonial bath.

Then Vastra, cloth; Yajnopavita, the sacred thread; Gandha, sandal paste; and 108 Pushpa — flowers offered while reciting Ashtottara Shata Namavali.

Dhupa, incense. Dipa, a lamp. Naivedya — the food that becomes prasad.

Tambula and Dakshina — betel leaf, offered together with a token of wealth.

The final aarti — Neerajana. And the sixteenth offering — Sashtanga Namaskara — bowing fully, in complete surrender.

Every morning you pick a flower for puja. But does your deity actually want that flower?The Puranas are specific — and two flowers are permanently forbidden. Most Hindus don’t know either.Here is the complete guide for this festive season — Shrawan Somwar Shiv Puja, Varalakshmi Vratam, Ganesh Chaturthi, Navaratri.

🐘 Ganesha

Marigold, red hibiscus, durva grass in odd numbers.
Never offer Tulsi — ever. There is a Puranic story behind this ban that most people have never heard.

🔱 Shiva

Bilva leaves, white flowers, Datura.
Never offer Ketaki (Kewda). Shiva himself cursed this flower — permanently — for bearing false witness. It is the only flower ever cursed by a deity.

🪷 Vishnu

Lotus, Tulsi in odd numbers, jasmine.
The Padma Purana calls Tulsi supreme above all flowers for Vishnu — the same leaf that is permanently forbidden for Ganesha.

🌸 Lakshmi

Lotus, rose, jasmine.
Fresh and whole only. Never withered. Never fallen. Lakshmi represents abundance — her flowers must be in full bloom.

🌺 Durga & Kali

Red hibiscus, rose, red flowers.
Red represents Shakti — the fierce, transformative, protective force of the divine feminine.

Why Tulsi is forbidden for Ganesha:

Tulsi Devi proposed marriage to Ganesha during a pilgrimage. He refused — he was a celibate. Hurt, she cursed him. He cursed her in return. His final words: “You will be beloved of Vishnu — but forever unacceptable in my worship.” Even today, priests who serve both keep their ritual trays completely separate.

Why Ketaki is forbidden for Shiva:

Brahma and Vishnu disputed who was supreme. Shiva appeared as an infinite Jyotirlinga. The Ketaki flower bore false witness — testifying that Brahma had reached the top of the infinite pillar. Shiva cursed it permanently: “For dishonesty — you are forever forbidden from my worship.” A beautiful, fragrant flower. Banned for one act of dishonesty.

This festive season — get the offering right. The deity you worship has a preference. The Puranas recorded it. Now you know.
