Happy World Water Day!
Water, often referred to as the black gold of our era, is a precious resource that is sometimes overlooked by city dwellers who may not fully understand its source, including the vital role glaciers play. The disconnect between those living in the mountains and urban areas is evident.
It is disheartening to hear that many of my city friends are unaware of where their water truly comes from, often simply stating “from the tap.” This lack of awareness is concerning.
This is why we are passionately advocating for safeguards for Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule. While some may question the necessity of such measures, it is imperative not only for the region itself but for the well-being of our entire nation.
Let us all take a moment to reflect on the significance of water conservation. A water crisis in Ladakh would have far-reaching consequences that would impact us all. I urge you to join us in supporting this crucial demand and to reach out to the Indian government in solidarity.
Together, let us work towards ensuring a sustainable future for all.
As a mountain guide, I have witnessed firsthand the effects of climate change on our glaciers. By observing the melting of the glacier and the movement of rocks on its surface throughout the season, I have seen the stark reality of how our glaciers are diminishing. It is a stark reminder of the urgent need for action.
Our legendary Sonam Wangchuk is currently on a climate fast for 21 days in support of the Sixth Schedule, alongside thousands of people from Ladakh. Let’s unite to save Ladakh and the Himalayas.
I hope this message resonates with you and inspires you to take action in protecting our precious water resources.
