Leh has many "hotels" but none quite like the new Shey Bhumi Retreat, which blends luxury, tradition and nature into a heady concoction. Guests looking to avoid being cooped up in stuffy hotel rooms need search no further. Just a short drive from Leh main city, through willow groves and past the snaking Indus river, brings you to serene six acre Leh berry plantation. In the middle of that plantati

on is an over hundred year old Ladakhi mansion, carefully restored now to house the Shey Bhumi restaurant, kitchen and lounge. Scattered around this estate, are ten independent cottages, built in the traditional Ladakhi style. Wooden beamed roofs, wooden floors, thick mud brick walls for heightened insulation, large en suite washrooms equipped with glass shower cubicles and all modern amenities, spacious verandahs to lounge in....this is no ordinary hotel room experience, we promise you. Shey Bhumi provides the ideal base for a perfect Ladakh getaway. Our carefully curated itineraries are designed to give you a complete sense of this magical land : it's culture, people, monuments, landscapes and customs. We offer complete tour packages that start with your arrival at Leh airport and end with us bidding you farewell at the airport again, after what would have been a scintillating vacation. This also happens to be the year of Naropa, the Mahakumbh of the Himalayas, that takes place once in 12 years. The epicentre of this hugely popular cultural fair is the Hemis Monastery, located just ten minutes drive away from the Shey Bhumi retreat.

Stay in one of the camps near the lakeside and witness the different shades of Pangong Tso. The night brings in the stars and you seem to almost reach them.

Thukpa, though born in Tibet, thukpa has become very popular among locals in Ladakh. It is a clear noodle soup that has added vegetables and spices. A big bowl is a meal by itself and also since it is warm, it goes perfectly with a chilly winter day.

Located at about 19 km from Leh, Thiksey is famous and one of the largest Ladakh monasteries.

A massive 12 storey complex which is home to about 500 monks, Thiksey monastery is controlled by the Gelukpa sect of Buddhism. It is home to one of the largest collections of Ladakh culture artefacts – books, paintings, swords, religious scripts and so on. It is also home to the largest Buddha statue in the Ladakh region – one of Maitreya Buddha which is about 2 storeys (almost 49 feet!) tall

A Muslim village, in a Buddhist realm, within a Hindu-majority country -that’s Turtuk. The mixed ancestry shapes the culture of this village. Another factor of influence has been the opening of Turtuk to tourists from around the world.

The monasteries of Ladakh stand proof of man living in peace with nature, even in her toughest forms. The monks here live solitary lives, preserving the culture as gifts from their ancestors. This makes the form of religion practised here very authentic and real.

The uniquely impressive geography of Turtuk is another reason for its seclusion from the outer world other than the government restrictions around the time of the war. Cushioned by the Karakoram mountains, the village is an extraordinary trek from the nearby villages like Hundar.
