Teeley Wali Majsid and stone bridge - in the 1800's.
Watercolour of a procession entering Lucknow from 'Views by Seeta Ram from Cawnpore to Mohumdy Vol. IV' produced for Lord Moira, afterwards the Marquess of Hastings, by Sita Ram between 1814-15. Marquess of Hastings, the Governor-General of Bengal and the Commander-in-Chief (r.1813-23), was accompanied by artist Sita Ram (flourished c.1810-22) to illustrate his journey from Calcutta to Delhi between 1814-15.

Lucknow, the capital for the Nawabs of Awadh, was visited by Lord Moira in 1814. This view shows the party entering the city of Lucknow on elephant back on October 18th, 1814, with the palace of Shuja al-Daula (Palace of Nawaub Suja Dowla at Lucnow) on the left, the Teeley Wali Masjid in the middle, and the stone bridge over the Gomti on the right.

The Gomti river flows through Lucknow. In the photo you can see Lal Pull, the red bridge, and the minarets of Teeley Wali Masjid, The Mosque on the Mound. It is one of the highest natural points in Lucknow.

Lucknow's Bara Imambara, built in 1794, is one of the world's largest imambaras. "Bara" means big. An Imambara is a shrine for Shia Muslims to congregate, especially during Muharram ceremonies to mourn the killing of Imam Hussain - the grandson of Prophet Muhammed. In those decades, not only Shia Muslims, but also many Sunni Muslims and Hindus participated in Muharram processions, fasted, and kept Hussain's cenotaphs. Till today, the Bara Imambara remains an important site for Muharram ceremonies in Lucknow.

The Residency was the epicentre of the battle for control of Lucknow in the 1987 war of independence. Approximately 3000 British inhabitants took refuge here during the course of the siege. The Residency contains memorials to those who fell and are buried here. The buildings bear the scars of fighting and have been left in their ruined state to keep alive the memory of the event.
