Ekhamukhalinga @ Cave 4 - Veena Cave

You will notice that the shiva style of carving is quite different from other carvings at Udhayagiri. The exceptional, almost feminine beauty of the face with seven strands of hair falling on both sides of the face.
The arrangement of the hair depicts the story of
how lord shiva broke the fall of the river Ganga as the waters came down from heaven.

Location : Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh

Temple History

This temple was constructed by King Harihara Bukka Raya of the Sangama Dynasty of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 15th century. It was built according to Vaishnavaite traditions.

Growing Nandhi

The devotees believe that the Nandi idol in front of the temple is continuously increasing its size. The locals say that the idol was initially much smaller than its present size. They say that certain experimentation was carried out on this idol and it was said that the type of rock out of which the idol is carved has a growing or enlarging nature associated with it.

Archaeological Survey of India has confirmed that the idol increases by 1 inch in every 20 years. Experiment suggests that the rock used to make the idol exhibits a growing nature.

It is said that people used to do Pradakshinas (rounds) around it in the past. The temple staff has already removed one pillar as the size of the Nandi has increased.

People visit temples to pray. What if the temple itself is a haunted place ???

A myth that is related to a famous Indian temple...

This is the story of Maihar devi Temple.

Situated on the Trikut mountain near Maihar. One has to climb 1100 steps to reach the temple.

Alaha & udhaam who are believed to have fought a battle against prithviraj Chauhan. These two were greatest devotees of Goddess Sharadha & were first to find this Maihar devi Temple in mountains.

It is said that the brothers Alha & udaam did tapasya for 12yrs & impressed the goddess with their devotion. Goddess Sharadha gave them the blessing of immortality.
It is believed that everyday goddess Sharadha appears infront of Aalha & udaam and gives them blessings.

It is believed that after the evening haarathi, when all the priests come down after closing the doors of the temple, then there is a sound of bell & worship from inside the temple.
It is said that Alha & Udaam, devotees of mata, still comes to worship.
The Mahanta of the maihar temple says that the Sharadha matha's first adornment is still done by Alha & when the doors of the temple are opened at the Brahma muhurtha, devotees find that someone has already performed worship.

The temple is closed in the night because it is believed that
these two brothers come here, dress up goddess & worship her. That is why it is believed that nobody is allowed to stay in the temple in night. If somebody forcefully stay here, they die!!!

Is Heliodorus one of the earliest Westerners on record to convert to Vaishnavism whose evidence has survived ???

Location : Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh.

Read our story for more details...

The Heliodorous pillar is a stone column that was erected in the year 113C.E
The pillar is named after Heliodorus, an Indo-Greek ambassador of Taxila-based king Antialcidas. In a private religious dedication inscribed in Brahmi script on the pillar, Heliodorus declared himself to be a Vasudeva devotee.
The temple and the inscriptions are among the earliest known evidence of Krishna-Vasudeva devotion and Vaishnavism in India.

INSCRIPTIONS ON THE PILLAR

The following is the translation of the Brahmi inscription found on the temple..

Further, the foundations for all the major components of a Hindu temple – garbhagriha (sanctum), pradakshinapatha (circumambulation passage), antarala (antechamber next to sanctum) and mandapa (gathering hall) – were found.
