Tour of Nilgiris 2017 Route Preview
Day - 2 - To the Coffee County
It's the second day. The Legs would have warmed up on day 1. It is time to go to the mountains.
Leaving behind the city of palaces we take the road to Madikeri - The Land of coffee☕and the land of Warriors ⚔️ .
The first hundred kilometres have beautiful wide roads passing through small towns flanked by undulating fields of ragi, to***co and sunflowers🌻. And you would love the smooth tarmac on this day.
A roadside watermelon shop 🍉 or a cucumber vendor or a villager selling native Coorg oranges🍊... you are spoilt for the choice of fruit on this day.
After passing Hunsur, Periyapatna and Kushalnagara we start our climb to Madikeri at Suntikoppa. This will also be the optional time trial for the day. As the mountains open up⛰️, breathe in a lung full of the cool mountain air.. there will be a lot more of this on the tour. At madikeri we turn north east and start descending on the Somwarpet road.. Welcome to the Coffee county. Take the winding road passing through endless plantations growing coffee, pepper, cardamom and some vanilla and cocoa too. We will catch a glimpse of Harangi’s backwaters on this route. Crossing numerous small bridges and culverts we will reach back Shuntikoppa and ride down to Purple Palms Resort & Spa just outside Kushalnagar.
Psst.. No trip to Coorg is complete without the famous Pandi curry (Kodava style Pork preparation) We are sure there will be plenty of local experts who know a place to get the best Pandi curry.. Time to make friends with your fellow riders and volunteers ;)
For the number crunchers : We would cover 156km, climbing around 2015m. The Suntikoppa-Madikeri climb is a Cat 3 climb of 9.5km with an average gradient of 2.8%. We would also scale 2 Cat 4 and 5 Cat 5 climbs on this day.
