Passengers on the waiting list who don’t get confirmed train tickets can now upgrade to travel by air by paying a little extra.
National carrier Air India (AI) has entered into an agreement with Indian railways wherein the airline will offer air tickets to passengers with unconfirmed AC class tickets. While AC first class passengers need to pay no extra, AC II passengers will have to pay Rs 1500-2000 plus their train ticket charges.
“The tie-up with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) will initially start with Rajdhani trains,” said Ashwani Lohani, chairman and managing director, AI.
The system will work like this: passengers on the waiting list will receive a message from the IRCTC giving them an option to travel by Air India to their destination. “If the passenger agrees, he can buy the ticket through the IRCTC website for a flight over the next 24 hours,” said an official.
“The option would be provided depending on the availability of seats. If an aircraft has ten vacant seats we would offer them on a first-come-first-serve basis,” said Lohani.
“An airline seat is a perishable commodity. An empty seat is lost forever once the aircraft takes off. So, this makes business sense,” said aviation expert Rajji Rai.
A Delhi-Mumbai Rajdhani AC I ticket costs Rs 4750 while AC II is priced for Rs 2865. A Delhi-Bangalore AC I ticket costs 6665 while and AC II is priced at 4015.
“Trains have a long waiting list so it’s a win-win situation both for the airline and the travelling public,” said Rai.

The Meenakshi Temple of Madurai

The Meenakshi Temple is one of the most famous Hindu temples located in the holy city of Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. The temple is dedicated to Parvati, known as Meenakshi, and her consort, Shiva, here named Sundareswarar. The temple has 14 towers, 4,500 pillars and 33,000 sculptures — it’s massive! The temple is as vital to the aesthetic heritage of South India as the Taj Mahal is to North India.

History:
Madurai Meenakshi temple’s history is as old as the history of the city itself. The temple forms the heart and lifeline of the 2500-year-old city of Madurai. This ancient city is built around the Meenakshi Temple which has been the geographical and ritualistic centre of the region since the times of the Pandyans. The temple is said to have been constructed by Kulashekara Pandyan.
The Meenakshi temple was almost completely destroyed in the year 1310 following the invasion of the Islamic conqueror Malikkapur. The present structure was built between 1623 and 1655 CE by Nayakas, who ruled Madurai from 16th to 18th century.

Legends:
Legend tells the tale that the second Pandyan king Malayadwaja Pandya and his wife Kanchananalaj were unable to conceive any children. In attempts to beget a child, Malaydwaja conducted many Vedic homas (rituals involving a fire pit). Finally, in the middle of one such ritual, an infant version of Goddess Parvati appeared. This infant was born with three breasts, but a voice from the heavens told her new parents not to worry because one of her breasts would disappear when she met her true love. The infant was named Tadaatagai and succeeded her father to the throne. She led armies on successful campaigns of conquest. In her last campaign in North India, she challenged Lord Shiva himself at Mount Kailash, but when She saw the great Lord, She fell in love with him. The bridegroom followed her home, married her, took the name Sundara Pandya and together they ruled Madurai. This scene is seen depicted in the temple.

According to mythology, the marriage of Meenakshi and Shiva actually took place in Madurai. It is still celebrated every year with great pomp and show.

Temple:
The Meenakshi temple has huge Gopurams (Towers) which can be seen from a far off distance. There are total 14 gopurams, but the tallest four stand on the outer walls, each facing one of the four directions (north, east, south, and west).
Amongst the four gateways, the south one is the tallest. It is about 50 m high and can be climbed to have a view of the entire city. Inside, there are two main shrines — one dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi (Parvati) and the other to her husband Sundareswarar (Lord Shiva). Both the Meenakshi and Sundareswarar shrines have gold plated towers whose tops can be seen from a great distance.
The bottom part of the temple is made from granite, while its gopuram are made from limestone. Each gopuram is a multi-storied structure in the shape of a steep pyramid, covered with thousands of stone figures of animals, gods, goddesses and demons painted in all colors of the rainbow.

There are an estimated 33,000 sculptures all over the temple. The temple wasn’t always so vividly painted. The original structure was probably unpainted granite. Then people started painting the sculptures because they wanted the temple to look colorful during big events and festivals.

There is also a sacred water tank, several halls and innumerable Mandapas. The ‘Mandapam’ of the temple consists of 985 pillars. Each pillar is unique. Some of the pillars are music pillars, which produce music when tapped. The special feature of these pillars is that they are carved out of a single granite stone block.
There are a number of other halls and towers in the temple which are worth watching for their sculptures, carvings and designs. Each one is different from the other, in one aspect or the other. The temple also has an art museum. It contains icons, drawings and photographs which date back to the 1200 – year – old history of Indian temple architecture in the south. A lot of information can be extracted on the Hindu pantheon and related legends from this splendid museum.

It was on the list of top 30 nominees for the “New Seven Wonders of the World”.
The sheer size of the temple means that it’s easy to get lost inside, and there’s so much to see and marvel over that you could easily spend days there.
Various kings renovated the temple, leaving a distinct impression of their artistic taste. A number of complex corridors, magnificent sculptures and a heavenly abode suitable for Goddess Meenakshi, include the additions to the temple that were done by different kings.

Air Pegasus will launch its thrice-a-week flight services between Madurai and Bengaluru on Friday. The services will be available on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Talking to reporters here on Thursday, its Director Ashwin Thomas said that Air Pegasus would operate an ATR 72-500 aircraft with 66 seats on an all economy configuration.

The new service would be the only direct flight service between Madurai and Bengaluru. With focus on becoming a major regional player, it would soon introduce Chennai-Madurai flight service.

“Now, Air Pegasus connects Bengaluru with Thiruvananthapuram, Hubli and Kadappah. Depending on the patronage on the Madurai sector, we hope to make it a daily service. We offer an introductory price of Rs. 1,234. As of now, the maximum fare will not go beyond Rs. 3,500,” he said.

The airliner, which has two aircraft, proposes to increase the fleet strength to five by next summer.

Its Deputy General Manager S. Kumar said that the smaller aircraft did not have a middle seat which often put passengers to inconvenience. “Besides, our counters will not be crowded because of the limited number of seats in the flight - hence a hassle-free check-in,” he said. “Our Chennai-Madurai services are sure to bring down the fares on the sector substantially,” he said. N. Sriram, a leading air travel agent, said that there was demand for a daily service from air travellers to Bengaluru.

New proposal of Civil Aviation Ministry to hit Madurai airport:

Madurai airport will be hit hard by the Civil Aviation Ministry’s new proposal not to allow any new domestic airline to operate on international routes which are less than six hours of journey duration from Indian cities.

This would prove detrimental to the State government’s Madurai-Tuticorin industrial corridor proposal, senior president of Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry S. Rethinavelu said.

Civil Aviation Ministry allows only a domestic airline with five years of domestic operations and possessing 20 aircraft to fly to foreign destinations.

At present, only Air India, Spice Jet, Jet Airways and Indigo satisfy this condition known as Rule 5/20.

While Air India is facing aircraft shortage, other players were not interested to operate flights from Madurai to destinations like Singapore, Malaysia, and Gulf countries, Mr. Rethinavelu said. The Union government’s earlier proposal to relax Rule 5/20 was heartening as newer domestic airliners could fly from Madurai to meet its international flight potential.

“We were in touch with airliners like Air Asia India, Vistara and Go Air, insisting them to operate international flights out of Madurai to cater to its untapped potential. In fact, Air Asia India and Vistara had evinced interest in our proposals,” Mr. Rethinavelu said.

The latest proposal of not allowing any new domestic player to operate on international routes of less than six hours journey from Indian cities will really shatter the dreams of providing more international air link to newer destinations.

“Since the journey time to all our potential destinations is less than six hours, the new domestic airliners will not be eligible to operate flights from Madurai to these international destinations,” he said.

“If the Make-in-India campaign of Modi government and the industrial corridor promoted by the State government have to take shape and help the economically and industrially backward southern districts, Madurai airport should have more international connectivity,” he said.

Otherwise, it would be difficult to attract foreign investments, he opined.

“If we want foreign investors, we need to give them better international air link. This will also affect employment generation, tourism and health sector of southern districts,” Mr. Rethinavelu said.

The chamber appealed to the State government to insist on the Centre to include Madurai airport in the bi-lateral airport treaties that would enable at least foreign airliners to operate their flights to Madurai.
