The internet will soon start joking about how celebrities associated with Christmas are already “defrosting” to prepare for the season, but there is one place in the world who takes it to another level, and it’s not in Europe or the Americas.

it’s the Philippines. Here, the festive season starts, not in November or October, but in September, and this period locally known as the “Ber months” lasts until the Feast of the Three Kings, on January 6th, making it the longest Christmas celebration in the world.

By the time December arrives, the entire country has been in Christmas mode for three months already. In December, Cebu turns into a city bathed in joy. Star-shaped lanterns called parols light every home, and thousands of worshippers rise before the sun every morning for the daily Christmas mass.

And then there’s the feast of Noche Buena, where families gather around a table heaped with mouth watering delicacies, creating an atmosphere so festive, it can only be created by the culture that celebrates the season louder and longer than anywhere else.

When you think of Japan, you probably think of springtime; the cherry blossoms blooming and the carpet of pink petals on the floor. But what if we told you that visiting Japan in winter could be immensely more magical? The falling petals are replaced with fluttering snowflakes, and the carpet of white now extends far beyond Fuji’s peak.

The distinct white and red landscape you see here is is Aomori, in the far north of Japan. The mountain rising above it is the volcano, Mount Iwaki, the spiritual centre of the entire Tsugaru region, complete with its own ancient shrine.

Largely off the radar of international travellers, this is Japan without the crowds, the noise, and the tourist trails, which is exactly why it’s worth discovering.

In the snow-covered mountains of Nagano, Japan, a small pink-faced little monkey emerges from the forest, saunters over to a steaming hot spring, and slips in. The snow falls around him, but he’s warm and cosy in his own personal spa. Meet Japan’s most relaxed resident: The Japanese macaque.

Colloquially known as the Snow Monkey, these clever little guys are the only non-human primates that live in such cold temperatures, so far north, probably because they’ve found this ingenious solution to the weather. Scientists say that this learned cultural behaviour was passed down through generations of macaques, making them not only completely adorable, but also social, community-driven, and communicative, which is quite impressive if you think about it!

Japan in winter is already spectacular, but these charming little creatures just make it that much more magical.

A 50-metre Walk of Lights tunnel, a towering Spalliera illumination crafted by Italian artists, and the legendary Blizzard Time; magical “snowfall” drifting down over the Supertrees three times every evening. It is the most joyfully absurd and yet wonderful thing. They said you couldn’t have a white Christmas, in 30-degree heat, and once again, Singapore proved them wrong.

While the rest of the hemisphere bundles up and stays indoors, Bali turns extraordinarily green and welcoming in January. The December rains have just polished the leaves, the foliage is thicker, the waterfalls flow fuller, and the rice terraces are more abundant than ever.
