We shall soon see a movie based on Rezang La War of 1962. Farhan Akhtar will portray Major Shaitan Singh, PVC (Posthumous). The movie highlights the extraordinary courage of the 120 soldiers of Charlie Company, 13 Kumaon Regiment, who fought to their last breath against overwhelming odds during the Sino-Indian War.

In the Eastern Ladakh, close to the India–China border, lies a place that commands silence, respect, and deep emotion—the Rezang La War Memorial (Ahir Dham). Located at an altitude of nearly 16,000 ft at Rezang La pass, the memorial pays tribute to the legendary heroes of the 13 Kumaon Regiment, who fought one of the most heroic last-stands in Indian military history during the 1962 Sino-Indian War. For travelers exploring the rugged beauty and historic landscapes of Ladakh, a visit to Rezang La is not just a sightseeing experience—it is a journey into India’s military legacy, bravery, patriotism, and sacrifice.

The 91-km-long Hanle-Chumar road has been thrown open for tourists. Chumar (Chumur), a nomadic village and a strategic point for Indian Army, is very close to India-China border.
Tourists can now travel from Hanle to Tso Moriri lake via Chumar and Salsa La pass. This new road journey through the beautiful landscapes will become a new tourist attraction.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has completed the construction of this road and the road is now black topped. The road starting from Hanle passes through Salsa La pass, Ryul Tso lake, Chilling Tso Lake, and Chumar (Chumur) before reaching Tso Moriri lake.

Ladakh, often called the “Land of High Passes,” is dotted with mesmerizing high-altitude lakes. While most tourists know of Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri, the region hides several unexplored gems that remain far from the hustle of mass tourism. Two such hidden treasures are Chilling Tso Lake and Ryul Tso Lake (or Kyun Tso Lake), tucked deep in the Changthang plateau near Hanle in Ladakh.

The lake lies on the newly built Hanle – Chumar (Chumur) road near Salsa La pass. The high altitude Ryul Tso lake at altitude of 16,430 ft (5,010 meters) is next to Chilling Tso lake and both the lakes are known as twin lakes.

Message from Superintendent of Police, District Lahaul-Spiti, following death of a tourist due to altitude sickness on Manali-Leh highway.

Date: 01 June 2025

It is with deep sorrow that we inform the public that on June 1, 2025, a tourist tragically passed away on the Manali–Leh National Highway due to sudden respiratory distress and symptoms consistent with High Altitude Sickness.

Details of the Deceased:
Name: Varinderjit Pandher Father’s Name: Sh. Chanan Singh Pandher Age: 54 years Address: Aman Bagh Colony, Jhill, Patiala, Punjab

The public is hereby informed that the district of Lahaul-Spiti is located at a very high altitude where the oxygen level in the air is lower than normal. In such conditions, if any person, especially those with pre-existing respiratory problems, travels to high-altitude areas such as beyond Darcha or from Gramphu to Losar, they may experience difficulty in breathing. Without timely medical assistance, this condition can prove fatal. There have been previous incidents of tourists losing their lives due to High Altitude Sickness.

Furthermore, mobile network availability is absent in high-altitude areas beyond Darcha and between Gramphu and Losar, making it extremely difficult to seek help in emergencies.

Advisory: If anyone has any respiratory problems, they are advised to avoid traveling beyond Darcha on the Manali-Leh route. Tourists traveling on this route must carry oxygen cylinders, oxygen tablets, and essential first aid kits. They should also drink small amounts of water regularly at short intervals to stay hydrated and reduce the risk of altitude sickness.

Issued by:
Ilma Afroz, IPS
Superintendent of Police District Lahaul-Spiti
