72 Hours in Sri Lanka:
A Lesson in Calm, Teamwork, and Undying Spirit
What began as a warm, easy family vacation in Sri Lanka shifted overnight into an unexpected 72-hour standstill. A family of four — travelling with two young children — suddenly found themselves unsure not about flights, but about whether they could even reach Colombo from Nuwara Eliya. Landslides, blocked roads, and water rising to chest level in low-lying areas brought the region to a near halt. Every update was uncertain, and the real challenge became navigating the journey out of the hills safely, unsure when conditions would allow them to move.
Their accommodation remained comfortable, but the situation demanded quick thinking. Meals had to be stretched. Snacks rationed. Every decision focused on keeping the children calm while preparing for a route that might or might not open.
Outside, the tension was real — nature was dictating the timeline.
And still, what stood out most was the family’s spirit. Despite the weather, they stayed calm. Despite rationing food, they stayed resourceful. Despite uncertainty, they stayed hopeful.
When the roads finally opened, the family made their way to Colombo — cautiously but gratefully. In a small, almost poetic twist, one of them mentioned that a certain section of the drive back was unexpectedly beautiful — lush, washed clean by the rains, serene despite everything.
These are guests who have travelled with Ecohunters for years — long-time travellers who have become more like friends. And this journey reminded us why that bond matters.
What stood out to us at Ecohunters was not just the family’s resilience, but the reminder it gave us as travel professionals — to stay calm, composed, and solution-focused, even when nature rewrites the plan. Situations like these teach us as much as they test our travellers.
When they finally reached Colombo safely and their onward plans resumed, the relief was unmistakable. They continued their journey not just relieved, but wiser and deeply grateful.
