FLORENCE... 25 years of visiting this beautiful city at least 3 times a year and never once feeling " O I have already seen this before"
It was an early morning when I first arrived in Florence years ago. The city was just waking up — shutters opening slowly, the smell of fresh bread drifting out of corner bakeries, and the low hum of life beginning again.
I walked with a coffee in hand (I am addicted), no real destination. That’s the kind of place Florence is — best explored without a map.
The streets are narrow, lined with buildings in faded yellows and ochres. Laundry hangs from balconies, and every now and then, a scooter zipped past.
I turned a corner and there it was — the DUOMO. Massive, quiet, and somehow comforting. I’d seen photos, but nothing prepares you for the way it just rises out of the heart of the city, as if it’s always been part of the sky.
Florence has a way of mixing the everyday with the extraordinary. I sometimes go to a small shop that sells handmade paper just down the road from where Dante once lived.
A quiet piazza with a few locals chatting in the shade is just steps from the Uffizi, home to Botticelli’s Birth of Venus.
I crossed the Ponte Vecchio, the old stone bridge lined with tiny jewelry shops. It’s been standing since the 1300s. Even Hi**er, oddly enough, chose not to destroy it during World War II. There's something about it — not just beauty, but resilience.
Lunch was a simple bowl of ribollita, a Tuscan bread soup, at a no-frills trattoria tucked behind Palazzo Pitti. The waiter, an older man, told me in broken English that the recipe hadn’t changed in generations. I believed him.
By afternoon, Florence was busier. Students sat along the steps of churches, sketching or reading. Tour groups passed by, but the city never felt rushed.
That evening, I sat along the Arno River. The light turned golden — the kind of light that makes the whole city feel like a painting. And I thought, maybe that’s Florence’s quiet magic. It doesn’t shout for your attention.
It just gently invites you to slow down… and notice.
THATS THE FIRENZE I AM IN LOVE WITH.
