INTRODUCTION: Belgium's a bizarre little place. Called 'Europe's most eccentric country' in one breath & 'boring' in the next, if you want something offbeat, this is it.
Ruled for centuries by ever-changing European powers, Belgie to the Flemish & La Belgique to the nation's French speakers only came into being in 1830. These days it's a bit like a teenager - world - weary, unruly & avant-garde all rolled into one. Don't make the mistake of judging it on day one or, worse still, in the first hour. It's the sort of place that takes time to know.
Belgium boasts one of Europe's Art Nouveau jewels & strokes of surrealism, all are displayed.
To top it off, Belgians have a keen sense of the good things in life; they know how to eat well, they make some of the world's best beers and there's no need to introduce their chocolates.
