What a Wanderers site inspection to a destination looks like. Some doors (or gondolas!) open up for a preview just for us before the season opens up for tourists. Here we are at Whakapapa, home of the in Mt Ruapehu, Tongariro National Park, North Island New Zealand. For LOTR fans this is where Mordor / Mt Doom (Mount Ngauruhoe) is located and the Gollum sequences were shot here at the natural rock face.
Skiing season: June to Oct.
Distance: 100kms; 1-1/2hrs spectacular drive along Lake Taupo and the Tongariro NP, a dual UNESCO World Heritage site.
